VIRTUAL INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

Abstract.
The article discusses issues of modern intercultural communication. The
authors focus on the changes that have occurred in intercultural communication under
the influence of ICT, in the process of virtualization of human interaction.
Key words:
cross-cultural communication, virtual communication, virtual
interaction, cross-cultural barriers.
The Internet and modern technological capabilities create a completely unique
space for business and personal contacts, which not only contributes to the expansion
of the geography of communication, but also modifies its essence, introducing
amendments to established ideas about human interaction.

Based on familiar, traditional, real communication, the Internet offers means for
its virtual implementation, erasing the boundaries of countries and time zones, opening
doors that few would have thought existed before. In relation to communication, the
'virtual' also cannot be considered unambiguously. On the one hand, there is a
camouflage of everything related to communication on the Internet. Avatars,
nicknames, special forms of Internet discourse and Internet communications
(associated with such means as, for example, a blog, chat, messenger, social networks)
allow you to identify yourself with an imaginary, invented character that has little in
common with a real person.
On the other hand, teleconferences and video communications are almost perfect
analogues of real interpersonal communication. At the same time, two incarnations of
the virtual coexist, being sides of the same coin, giving the right to choose (which
means and for what purpose to use) and warning about possible misconceptions and
psychological barriers that may arise between communicants due to a certain
indirectness of communication. Virtual communication, on the one hand, is
communication without the presence of a living person, but with a person indicated by

signs and symbols.
On the other hand, it is the foundation for analyzing large volumes of data and is
the main activity of a digital user, a person with the ability to multitask, to constantly
work with electronic sources that change approaches to information consumption, a
person who can quickly switch between different information flows.
Interactive, effective, virtual leads to the devaluation of live, traditional
communication, which is transformed into virtual communication, more accessible and
convenient, requiring less time and effort to organize. At the same time, the essence of
virtual communication contributes to the emergence of new sign systems, including a
special language of the virtual world. This language is poorer and simpler, since it
serves to transmit information in a data-rich, multifunctional environment of virtual
space. This is why speech forms of Internet discourse are called oral-written: despite
the visual textual form, such speech is characterized by a high level of implicitness,
situationality and incompleteness.
The speed of the modern world triggers the law of inverse proportionality in the
following context: the more information needs to be transmitted, the faster it needs to
be done and the more people it is necessary to communicate with over a period of time,
the poorer the means by which this communication is carried out, the more traditional
communication suffers. A deeper analysis allows us to talk about changes in linguistic
personality as a set of abilities and characteristics of a person that determine the creation
and perception of speech works (texts), which differ in the degree of structural and
linguistic complexity, depth and accuracy of reflection of reality, determined by the
target orientation.

The formation of a new information society turns out to be closely
interconnected with a change in the form and content of language, and, consequently,
thinking, which, adapting to the constant information oversaturation, becomes clip-
based.
The problems of clip thinking of people of a new cognitive type lie in the
contradictions between: “mosaic” and holistic pictures of the world; perception of time
separate semantic fragments and a long linear sequence; high speed of processing small

pieces of information and depth of elaboration of details; ability to multitask and
concentrate. Clip quality influences: the perception of the surrounding world, the ability
to analyze information, the system of moral and ethical values, and therefore, first of
all, the culture of the individual.
If momentary interaction in the information society depends on the speed of data
processing and information transfer, which is what clip thinking provides, then
linguistic transformations that destroy the connection with culture through language are
much more significant and important, while at the same time being less noticeable for
the person himself.
Currently, it is difficult to unambiguously assess the changes taking place, but one
thing is certain: traditional and Internet communication are intertwined in the
communications of the modern world, where the boundaries of cultures and states are
erased thanks to information and communication technologies and the possibilities of
virtual interaction. The real and the virtual are not opposite, they complement each
other, are characterized by mutual influence, transform the processes of communication
and the connection of the individual with his own and other cultures. It is the
information period of the development of society that raises the question of preserving
cultural identity in the stunning pace of global data movement.
