Introduction.
In the construction industry, the demand for lightweight and energy-efficient
materials has been increasing rapidly. Foam concrete is one such material that has gained popularity
in recent years. It is a type of lightweight concrete that contains small air bubbles or foam in the
mixture. The foam acts as a lightweight filler, reducing the overall weight of the concrete, while still
maintaining its strength and durability.
The most basic definition of foamed concrete is that it is ‘mortar with air bubbles in it.’ The
air content of foamed concrete may be up to 75% air by volume.
Foamed Concrete can be placed easily, by pumping if necessary, and does not require
compaction, vibrating or levelling. It has excellent resistance to water and frost, and provides a high
level of both sound and thermal insulation. It is very versatile, since it can be tailored for optimum
performance and minimum cost by choice of a suitable mix design. The fact that foamed concrete
can be made using different mix designs means that it is not a single product. With the exception of
pre-cast units, foamed concrete cannot be bought ‘off the shelf’. Foamed concrete is nearly always
made on-site and it is made using a mix design specifically selected for each application or job.
Although the material is called foamed concrete, it is not really concrete at all. Foamed concrete is
actually foamed mortar, where the mortar is made from either cement and water or sand, cement and
water. Foamed concrete does not contain aggregates.
Foam concrete has a number of advantages over traditional concrete, including:
Lightweight: Foam concrete is typically 20-50% lighter than traditional concrete, making it
easier to transport and install.
Strong and durable: Foam concrete has a compressive strength of up to 10 MPa, which is
comparable to traditional concrete.
Good insulation properties: Foam concrete has good thermal and acoustic insulation
properties, making it ideal for use in energy-efficient buildings.
Fire resistant: Foam concrete is fire resistant and can withstand temperatures of up to 1000
degrees Celsius.
Versatile: Foam concrete can be used for a wide range of applications, including insulation,
lightweight structural elements, and soundproofing.
Foam concrete is a sustainable material, as it uses less cement and water than traditional
concrete. It is also recyclable, and can be used to produce new foam concrete products.
Here are some examples of how foam concrete is being used today:
Insulation: Foam concrete is used to insulate buildings, roofs, and walls. It can also be used
to insulate pipes and other infrastructure.
Lightweight structural elements: Foam concrete is used to make lightweight structural
elements, such as roof slabs, wall panels, and floor slabs.
Soundproofing: Foam concrete is used to soundproof buildings, rooms, and other spaces.
Other applications: Foam concrete is also used to make precast concrete elements, artistic and
decorative objects, and other products.
Foam concrete is a versatile and sustainable material with a wide range of applications. It is
an excellent alternative to traditional concrete, especially for projects where weight, insulation, and
sustainability are important factors.
Methods.
There are two main methods for producing foam concrete:
Pre-foaming. In the pre-foaming method, the foaming agent is mixed with water and
compressed air to create a stable foam. The foam is then added to the concrete mixture and evenly
distributed throughout the mixture using a mixer.
Mix-foaming. In the mix-foaming method, the foaming agent is added to the concrete mixture
and mixed using a mixer. The shearing action of the mixer creates a stable foam in the concrete
mixture.
The pre-foaming method is generally used for large-scale production of foam concrete, while
the mix-foaming method is generally used for small-scale production.
Here is a step-by-step overview of the foam concrete production process using the pre-
foaming method:
Measure and mix the cement, sand, and water to create a concrete mixture.
Mix the foaming agent with water and compressed air to create a stable foam.
Add the foam to the concrete mixture and mix evenly using a mixer.
Pour the foam concrete mixture into molds or forms.
Cure the foam concrete according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Foam concrete can be produced using a variety of different types of foaming agents. The type
of foaming agent used will depend on the desired properties of the foam concrete. For example, some
foaming agents produce a foam with a high density, while others produce a foam with a low density.
Foam concrete can also be produced with a variety of different types of aggregates. The type
of aggregate used will also depend on the desired properties of the foam concrete. For example,
lightweight aggregates, such as pumice and expanded shale, are often used to produce foam concrete
with a low density.
Foam concrete is a versatile material that can be used for a variety of applications. It is
important to choose the right foaming agent and aggregates for your specific application.
As a leading manufacturer of mobile batching plants Fibo Intercon, has recently developed an
add-on to their mobile batching plant that allows the production of foam concrete. With this new
addition, Fibo Intercon has made it possible to produce both regular concrete and foam concrete with
their mobile batching plant. The plant is equipped with a frequency converter that can vary the speed
of the mixer during the mixing time. This helps to ensure that the foam is distributed evenly
throughout the mixture, resulting in a consistent and high-quality foam concrete product.
The foam add-on box, located on the side of the plant, doses the foam into the mixer during
the mixing process. This ensures that the foam is distributed evenly and consistently throughout the
mixture. The foam concrete produced by the Fibo mobile batching plant is of high quality, and it can
be used for a variety of construction projects, including insulation, lightweight structural elements,
and soundproofing.
Fibo mobile batching plants are concrete batching plants that are mounted on a trailer or
chassis, making them easy to move and transport from one job site to another. This makes them ideal
for a variety of applications, including:
Road and bridge construction
Commercial and industrial construction
Residential construction
Precast concrete production
