Annotation:
This thesis explores the integration of technology into English Language
Teaching (ELT) and its potential benefits, challenges, and future developments. The
author highlights four key benefits of technology in ELT: enhanced learning experience,
improved access to resources, personalized learning, and increased collaboration and
communication. However, several challenges are also identified, including technical
issues, the need for teacher training and support, and the digital divide. The author then
discusses three potential future developments in technology and ELT: artificial
intelligence and virtual reality, mobile learning, and data-driven instruction.

Introduction
Technology in English language teaching (ELT) has become increasingly
prevalent in recent years, offering new opportunities for teachers and learners. This thesis
will explore how technology can be effectively integrated into ELT, focusing on its
benefits, challenges, and potential future developments.
Benefits of Technology in ELT
- Enhanced learning experience: Technology can provide a more engaging and
interactive learning environment, allowing students to explore and practice English
language skills in a variety of contexts [1], [2].
- Improved access to resources: The internet and digital tools offer a wealth of
authentic materials, such as videos, podcasts, and online articles, which can be easily
accessed and incorporated into lessons [1], [2].
- Personalized learning: Technology allows for individualized instruction, with
adaptive learning platforms and online resources tailored to students’ specific needs and
learning styles [2].
- Increased collaboration and communication: Online platforms and tools enable
students to collaborate with their peers, both locally and globally, fostering
communication skills and cultural understanding [2].
Challenges of Technology in ELT
- Technical issues: The integration of technology in the classroom can be hindered
by technical problems, such as internet connectivity issues or software compatibility [2].
- Teacher training and support: Teachers may require additional training and
support to effectively integrate technology into their lessons, including understanding
how to use new tools and platforms and adapting their teaching methods [2].
- Digital divide: Not all students have equal access to technology and the internet,
which can create disparities in learning opportunities and outcomes [2].
Future Developments in Technology and ELT

- Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR): AI and VR technologies
have the potential to revolutionize ELT by providing more immersive and personalized
learning experiences, allowing students to practice language skills in realistic and
interactive virtual environments [2].
- Mobile learning:
The increasing use of smartphones and tablets offers new opportunities for mobile
learning, allowing students to access learning materials and practice English language
skills anytime, anywhere [2].
- Data-driven instruction:
Collecting and analyzing data on students’ learning progress and performance can
help teachers tailor their instruction to individual students’ needs, providing more
effective and personalized learning experiences [2].
In conclusion, the use of technology in English language teaching has the potential
to greatly enhance the learning experience for students, providing them with access to a
wide range of resources, personalized instruction, and opportunities for collaboration and
communication. However, the successful integration of technology in the classroom
requires careful planning, teacher training, and consideration of the challenges and
limitations of these tools.
