Introduction.

Speaking is one of the most important skills in learning a new language. It helps students

express their thoughts, ask questions, and take part in conversations. However, for many
English learners, speaking is also the most difficult skill. This is because it requires not only
grammar and vocabulary knowledge, but also confidence, good pronunciation. In many
traditional classrooms, students do not get enough time to practice speaking. Teachers usually
focus more on reading, writing, or grammar. Also, many students feel shy or afraid of making
mistakes when speaking in front of others. This reduces their motivation and limits their
speaking practice. To solve this problem, students often look for other ways to improve their
speaking outside the classroom. One helpful way is using online platforms like YouTube.
YouTube is free and easy to use. It has thousands of English videos where learners can listen

to native speakers, repeat words and phrases, and learn how English is spoken in real situations.
These videos are available 24/7, so students can practice anytime they want. This article
explains how YouTube helps students improve their speaking skills. It shows how students use
YouTube to learn pronunciation, build fluency, and become more confident speakers. It also
gives suggestions for how teachers can use YouTube in English lessons.

I. Literature Review

Many researchers have studied how people learn to speak a new language. Most of them

agree that speaking improves when students hear real English and use it often. This idea comes
from Stephen Krashen’s Input Hypothesis. He believes that learners need to hear
understandable language that is slightly above their current level. This type of input helps them
learn naturally and improve their speaking without too much pressure. Jeremy Harmer (2001)
also says that listening to real English is better than only reading textbooks. Students need to
hear how words are really used in daily life. YouTube helps by providing real-life content such
as interviews, conversations, short films, vlogs, and story-based lessons. These videos help
students hear correct pronunciation, sentence stress, intonation, and rhythm. Richards and
Renandya (2002) write that students feel more motivated when the learning material is
interesting. When students enjoy what they are watching, they are more likely to pay attention,
repeat the content, and try speaking themselves. This makes the learning process more
effective. Some researchers such as Nation and Newton (2009) and Gilakjani (2012) also
explain that speaking improves when learners practice listening and speaking together.
YouTube supports this idea because students can listen and then immediately repeat or speak.
This is similar to the shadowing technique, where learners try to copy the speaker exactly —
with the same speed, tone, and pronunciation. In short, the literature shows that speaking is
improved through real, engaging, and regular input. YouTube is one of the tools that provides
this kind of learning opportunity in a modern and student-friendly way.

II. Methodology

To understand how YouTube helps with speaking, an interview was conducted with five

university students. All of them use YouTube to learn English. The questions asked were:

- How often do you watch YouTube for learning English?
- What kind of videos do you watch?
- How has it helped your speaking skills?

III. Data Analysis and Discussion

Most students said they watched English-speaking YouTubers at least 3 times a week.

They preferred content like travel vlogs, interviews, English learning tips, and short films. One
student said she repeats lines from the video out loud to improve pronunciation. Another student
explained that subtitles help her understand and remember new words. All participants said
YouTube improved their confidence to speak English, especially in real-life situations. They
also learned new phrases and slang that textbooks do not teach. One learner said, "I feel like
I'm practicing with a real person when I watch and repeat after the speaker."

Conclusion

YouTube is a powerful tool for developing speaking skills. It provides students with

access to real English and allows them to practice in a fun and flexible way. Students can learn
at their own pace, and watching videos helps improve pronunciation, fluency, and vocabulary.
