In the era of globalization, translation plays a significant role in modern life of society. It
has become an essential component of international communication across fields such as
medicine, science, business, and law. Among the different types of translation, simultaneous
interpretation is the most frequently used type at international conferences.
Simultaneous interpretation is considered as one of the most challenging forms of
translation. It is a method of oral translation in which the interpreter listens to the speaker
and delivers the translation almost simultaneously [1;197]. The primary difficulty lies in the
limited time available for processing and rendering speech. Therefore, simultaneous
interpreters must possess specialized skills and effectively apply translation strategies to
perform successful translation for the audience.
There are several key qualities that every simultaneous interpreter must have. These
include:
High Speed of Thinking and Reaction
The essence of simultaneous interpretation lies in the near-instantaneous delivery of the
translation. This requires interpreters to think quickly and respond immediately to the
speaker's message [4;53].
Strong Concentration

Interpreters must maintain full concentration throughout the speech. Even brief
distractions can result in a loss of meaning or accuracy.
Stress Tolerance
Simultaneous interpretation involves working under constant pressure. In large-scale
international events, interpreters bear great responsibility, and even minor mistakes can have
serious consequences.
Excellent Short-Term Memory
Short-term memory plays a crucial role in capturing and holding the speaker’s message,
while working memory is involved in processing, analyzing, and rendering it into the target
language. It also retrieves relevant information from long-term memory when needed.
Several translation strategies are commonly used to ease the cognitive load during
simultaneous interpretation:
Probabilistic Forecasting.
Introduced by I.M. Feigenberg [5;63], this strategy involves the interpreter’s brain
subconsciously generating hypotheses about how a speaker's message will develop. These
predictions are based on contextual clues and the interpreter’s internal assessment of likely
semantic outcomes [3;128].
Speech Compression
This strategy involves reducing the number of linguistic elements used to convey the
same meaning. Compression can occur on various levels: syllabic, syntactic, lexical, or
semantic [3;147]. It helps streamline the interpreter’s speech and reduce cognitive strain.
Speech Expansion
Expansion refers to increasing redundancy and lowering the information density of
speech. This strategy is useful when the speaker speaks slowly, allowing the interpreter to
elaborate slightly for clarity or emphasis.
Antonymic Translation
This technique is used to resolve conflicts in lexical or grammatical compatibility
between the source and target languages. By replacing a phrase with its antonym and
adjusting the structure, the interpreter maintains both accuracy and naturalness in the
translation [2;19].
Preparation as a Crucial Element
Another key factor in effective simultaneous interpretation is preparation. Familiarizing
oneself in advance with the speaker, his previous speeches, tone of voice, subject matter, and
speaking style can significantly enhance translation accuracy and confidence during live
interpretation.
Simultaneous interpretation is a complex, high-pressure task that demands not only
linguistic fluency but also mental agility, emotional resilience, and strategic thinking.
Mastering key skills and applying well-developed translation strategies can significantly
enhance the quality and efficiency of the interpretation.
These tools not only reduce cognitive overload but also support the interpreter in
delivering accurate, natural, and contextually appropriate translations in real time.
