Abstract:

The mediation of the author is a complex semantic-stylistic phenomenon,

which affects the method of reception and interpretation of the work. It allows the reader to
look at events from his own independent point of view, to understand the meaning of the work
more deeply. The use of various stylistic means of the author’s mediation enriches the work
stylistically and enhances its impact on the reader.

Размышление автора в художественном дискурсе представляет собой

сложное семантико-стилистическое явление, влияющее на способ восприятия и
интерпретации произведения. Оно позволяет читателю взглянуть на события со своей
независимой точки зрения, глубже понять смысл произведения. Использование
различных стилистических средств авторского вывода стилистически обогащает
произведение и усиливает его воздействие на читателя.

Author’s mediation

a non-plot fragment in a fictional text, serving to directly express the

thoughts and feelings of the author-narrator. In an author's digression, the author-narrator
unexpectedly intrudes into the text, interrupting the movement of the plot with a commentary
on the actions of the characters and their assessment, a characterization of the society, the era
in which the events depicted take place. In form, an author's digression can be an appeal to the
characters of the work or to the readers; its inclusion in the text is often explained by the artistic
play of the writer, demonstrating his freedom from the rules of a consistent and continuous
presentation of events.

In the history of English literature, authorial presence (or perhaps better phrased as

authorial intrusion, or its converse, authorial distancing/withdrawal) is a significant semantic
and stylistic phenomenon, playing a crucial role in how a work is received, interpreted, and its
overall impact shaped. This phenomenon manifests when an author, instead of fully expressing
their own thoughts and feelings, presents events objectively, allows characters to develop
independently, or grants greater freedom to the narrative flow. This article analyzes the
semantic and stylistic structure of authorial presence/distancing within English literary
discourse.

Author’s mediation can be achieved through various literary styles and techniques. For

example, the position and role of the narrator are of paramount importance. If the narrator

recounts events dispassionately, refraining from expressing personal opinions and emotions,
this indicates authorial withdrawal/distancing. For instance, distinct characteristics of
authorial presence/distancing can be observed based on the development of genres,
particularly within the periods of realism and modernism. In realism, the author strives for
objective narration, focusing on details, yet the narrator's presence is still perceptible,
influencing the narrative flow with their observations and analyses. In modernism, however,
authorial presence/distancing becomes more pronounced, with the narrator often
disappearing entirely or their presence being minimally felt.

Author’s mediation can lead to several semantic shifts in terms of a work's meaning and

interpretation. Firstly, it allows the reader to engage in independent thinking and
interpretation of events and characters. Instead of the author explicitly stating their opinion,
the reader is encouraged to determine the meaning of the work themselves. This fosters
multiple and deeper interpretations of the text. Secondly, authorial distancing/withdrawal
contributes to a sense of objectivity regarding the events, enabling the reader to view them
independently, detached from the author's personal biases.

Author’s mediation also influences a work's stylistic features. In this style, the narrative

language is typically simple and objective, with a limited use of emotionally charged devices
such as adjectives and adverbs. Because the author doesn't directly interfere with the events,
the narrative can unfold rapidly, with greater emphasis on dialogue and internal monologues.
Furthermore, authorial presence/distancing allows for increased use of other stylistic devices
aimed at capturing the reader's interest, such as suspense and unexpected plot twists.

In English literature, authorial presence/distancing manifests differently in the works of

various authors. For example, in Jane Austen's novels, while the narrator expresses personal
opinions, they still strive for objective narration, avoiding in-depth psychological analysis of the
characters. Ernest Hemingway's works, on the other hand, provide clearer examples of
authorial distancing/withdrawal. His short, simple sentences and indirect expression of
emotions demonstrate the author's non-interference with the events. Authorial distancing
creates the illusion of objectivity regarding the events. The narration of events without the
author's personal opinions and evaluations evokes in the reader a sense of credibility and
verisimilitude. However, this objectivity is not absolute, as the author's choice of words,
narrative style, and other stylistic devices still exert a certain influence. This approach can be
observed in realist literature.
