In this article, we discuss the methods of translating the suffix –ing into Uzbek and examine some of the challenges that arise during the translation process. We also analyze the similarities and differences found in English texts containing the –ing form when translated into Uzbek.

Abstract

: In this article, we discuss the methods of translating the suffix –

ing into Uzbek and examine some of the challenges that arise during the
translation process. We also analyze the similarities and differences found in
English texts containing the –ing form when translated into Uzbek.

The English language is rich in grammatical forms that often pose

challenges when translated into other languages, especially those with different
structural features, like Uzbek. One such form is the -ing form, which plays
multiple roles in English grammar. It can function as a gerund, a present
participle, or a verbal noun, depending on the context. Understanding how to
translate the -ing form into Uzbek requires careful analysis of its grammatical
function and the meaning it conveys in a given sentence. The Nature of the -ing
Form. The -ing form is derived by adding the suffix -ing to the base form of a
verb (e.g., read → reading, swim → swimming). It serves various grammatical
functions: As a gerund, the -ing form acts as a noun while still retaining verbal
properties. It often functions as the subject or object in a sentence.

Example: I enjoy reading.
→ In Uzbek:

Men o‘qishni yoqtiraman.

Present Participle
As a present participle, it functions as an adjective, modifying nouns or

pronouns, and is often used to indicate an action in progress.

Example:
The boy playing in the yard is my brother. In Uzbek:

Hovlida o‘ynayotgan

bola mening ukam.

Sometimes, the -ing form can serve as a verbal noun, referring to actions or

processes as general concepts.

Example: Swimming is good for your health.
In Uzbek:

Suzish sog‘liq uchun foydalidir.

Since Uzbek is an agglutinative language, it does not possess an equivalent -

ing form. Therefore, translators must use contextual equivalents based on the
function of the -ing form in the sentence.

Gerund →Uzbek -ish/-sh suffix
Watching TV is fun. Televizor ko‘rish qiziqarli.
Present participle → Uzbek participles (-ayotgan, -ayotgan)
A running man entered the room. Yugurayotgan kishi xonaga kirdi.
Continuous tense → Uzbek verb tense (present continuous)
She is writing a letter. U xat yozyapti.
Common Challenges in Translation.
Translating the -ing form into Uzbek involves identifying the grammatical

role the form plays:

depends on understanding the sentence context fully. Misinterpretation may
lead to awkward or incorrect Uzbek equivalents.

What is the -ing Form in English?

The

-ing form

is a verb form created by adding

to the base form of a

verb (e.g.,

go → going

read → reading

). It is one of the most versatile and widely

used forms in English grammar. Depending on the context, it can serve several
grammatical functions:

1. Gerund

When the -ing form acts as a

noun

, it is called a

gerund

. Gerunds can

function as the subject, object, or complement in a sentence.

Examples:

Swimming

is fun. → Subject

2.

She enjoys

reading

. → Object

3.

His hobby is

painting

. → Complement

Present Participle

The -ing form is also used as a

present participle

, which functions as an

adjective

or part of a

verb tense

(usually the continuous/progressive tenses).

a) As an adjective

Describes a noun by indicating an ongoing action.

b) In continuous tenses

Used to show ongoing action with auxiliary verbs (

be

verbs).

I am

right now.

3. As Part of Fixed Expressions or Prepositional Phrases

Some expressions or verbs are followed by the -ing form
I look forward to

meeting

you.

She is interested in

learning

languages.

4. As a Verbal Noun

Sometimes the -ing form behaves like a noun but still retains its verbal

nature (can take an object or be modified by an adverb).

Running

long distances requires stamina.

Coming to conclusion we define the -ing form in English is multifunctional

and can express actions as nouns, adjectives, or verbs. Uzbek, lacking a direct
grammatical equivalent, requires translators to interpret the -ing form based on
context and function. The most common Uzbek equivalents include:

1.

-ish/-sh suffixes for gerunds,

2.

-ayotgan/-ayotgan participles for adjectives,

3.

and tense-based forms like

o‘qiyapti

for progressive verbs.

Accurate translation of the -ing form enhances clarity and preserves the

grammatical integrity of both languages. Understanding these structures is
essential for language learners, translators, and linguists alike.
