DIFFICULTIES OF WRITING AN ESSAY IN EFL

In recent years, there has been significant development in education and technology, surpassing
previous achievements. The issues of further improvement of education and upbringing science,
obtaining of knowledge, enhancing critical thinking, boosting intercommunication through young
people, their proficiency of foreign language learning and up to date information and modern
technologies remain the priorities of state policy. This implies that the advancement of modern
technology will lead to the emergence of numerous talents in our nation, as many learners will display
their abilities. The establishment of a fair society is viewed as the primary goal of establishing a
sovereign and resilient state in Uzbekistan, where the individual is considered the main value, with
their interests, needs and rights being honored. Modern Uzbekistan focuses on its advancement on
the formative of a harmonious improved, highly educated and thinking younger generation. Through
prioritizing education, critical thinking, spirituality, morality, enlightenment, the country is investing
in the future well-being of its citizens. This approach not only fosters a sense of national identity and
pride but also equips individuals with the skills and values necessary to navigate an increasingly
complex and interconnected world.
Writing essay is an important skill that can benefit people in various aspects of someone's
life, from academic and professional success to personal development and self-expression. It is a
valuable tool for learning, communication and intellectual growth. The process of writing an essay
involves three main stages: pre-writing, drafting, reviewing. Morgan argues his article that the
students are going to stuck when they want to begin their writing of the first idea or topic, they are
confused to write the thesis statement that can be in the first or last sentence of the paragraph, they
must consider to what the audience or reader who will read their essays also the purpose of the essay,
they are mostly in fear or failure while writing because of how they express their idea, feeling and
experience. Based on the explanation, all of the writing difficulties in writing an essay will happen in
writing essay process, and the essay is a part of basic academic writing form[3:3]. Talking about the
concept of writing and learning experience, Ojima stated that the EFL or ESL learners use their own
ways in making the concept of their writing. It can help them to compose the writing based on their
individual experience, motivation and tasks. It means that the learning experience is important for the
students in learning writing[4:19].These challenges are common in the essay writing process, which
is a fundamental part of academic writing. It is significant for students to address these difficulties
through practice, guidance, and perseverance to improve their essay writing skills. The main thing
that many students struggle with when writing an essay is the lack of ideas and even when they
struggle, they make mistakes when using topic-based vocabularies and even forget. Boun argues
that the students felt difficult when developing and organizing ideas, using correct grammar
and word choices, and applying correct writing mechanics, such as the use of capital letter,
spelling, and punctuation. The difficulty faced by the students in writing skill [1:106].In addition,
they will not be able to show their feelings and experiences in writing. Moreover, by not being able
to focus on one place, the meanings of the thoughts are not connected to each other. Primarily, it is
crucial to raise students' awareness of the importance of English writing skills and the writing module
in the preparatory English program as writing is an important tool for users to communicate in a
variety of ways. When English users can write well, they will be able to speak well and promote
reading ability more effectively. Besides, mastering writing skills will assist learners to improve their
ability to use vocabulary and grammar, thereby developing their own language skills. These are all
common challenges that students face when writing an essay. Here are some tips to help overcome
these difficulties:
- Start by brainstorming and outlining your ideas before you begin writing. Having a clear
structure and plan in place can help you stay focused throughout the essay.

- If you're struggling with writer's block, try taking a break and coming back to your writing
with a fresh perspective. You can also try freewriting or discussing your ideas with someone else to
generate new thoughts.
- To manage time constraints, create a schedule or timeline for completing your essay. Break
down the writing process into smaller tasks and set deadlines for each one.
- When conducting research, start by identifying key sources and information that will support
your argument. Take notes and organize your research materials to make it easier to reference them
later.
- Focus on creating a strong thesis statement and outline to guide the organization of your essay.
Make sure each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and transitions smoothly to the next.
- Be carefull for your essay's grammar and punctuation errors. Consider using grammar
checkers or asking someone else to review your work for feedback.
- When revising your essay, read it aloud or have someone else read it to catch any mistakes or
areas that need improvement. Make revisions based on feedback and continue to refine your writing
until you are satisfied with the final product.
- By reviewing and analyzing other people's essays, he gathers his thoughts and thereby helps
himself in writing an essay. In this way, learners can increase their knowledge and skills by seeing
the words used by that person in their essay and expanding their thoughts.
By following these tips and practicing regularly, students can improve their essay writing skills
and overcome the challenges that come with it. Remember that writing is a process that takes time
and effort, but with dedication, students can develop writing abilities and produce high-quality essays.
In conclusion, while writing an essay can present challenges and difficulties, it is significant to
remember that these obstacles can be overcome with the right approach and mindset. By breaking
down the writing process into manageable steps, seeking feedback and guidance from peers or
instructors, and dedicating time to revise and refine their work, students can improve an essay writing
skill. Dang Thi and Anh Ngos highlight that from analyzing the students' common writing mistakes,
their difficulties in practicing writing and the causes, the research proposes solutions to improve the
English writing skills of the students. Also, it helps enhance the effectiveness of the teaching and
learning of writing skill [5:83]. Remember that practice makes perfect, and every time when student
write an essay would be given an opportunity to learn and grow as a writer. Embrace the challenges
as opportunities for growth, and don't be afraid to seek support when needed. With perseverance and
determination, student can develop his essay writing ability and produce high-quality, well-crafted
essays.
