UTILIZING WORD GAMES AND PUZZLES TO ENHANCE VOCABULARY

Building a strong vocabulary is just as crucial as learning a new language for success in this
globalized world. That is because people learn a new language to express ideas and feelings fluently
297
which could only happen when a rich vocabulary is built. Therefore, expanding vocabulary is one of
the most important aspects of learning foreign languages. EtiborMurodova says that 'Not even all
native speakers can boost of knowing the entire vocabulary of their native language. It is believed
that it is enough to know only 800 words to speak English fluently [1:79]. The challenge is not the
amount of vocabulary available to learn, it is finding the best way to learn them. It is not a secret that
vocabulary is being taught in old-fashioned ways in educational institutions despite the Internet
technologies and modern trends. Traditional methods of vocabulary teaching and learning such as
learning by heart and memorizing have limitations in achieving language fluency. Moreover, these
techniques are not enough to communicate effectively not only in English but also in other foreign
languages. Incorporating vocabulary games and puzzles can change word memorization process into
a fun and engaging experience that help learners overcome the limitations of traditional methods.
Now I am going to unveil some interactive word games that can transform the English language
classroom into an effective learning environment.
1. Word guessing game [2].This is one of the most interesting games to play in the English
classroom which can create an amazing atmosphere to boost vocabulary. Firstly, pupils need a
dictionary and a few sheets of paper. To play this game 5 to 6 students are enough but a teacher or a
leader of the game may change this number according to the number of pupils in the classroom. The
game commences with participants arranged in a circular or semi-circular formation ensuring they
face one another. Subsequently, designated game leader consults the dictionary to select one word.
At this moment, it is the responsibility of the leader to ascertain that none of the participants possess
prior knowledge of the definition of the chosen word. Following that, the leader reads the selected
word that is unknown for every participant loudly without mentioning the definition and all the
members of the game should write the meaning of the word by guessing. The leader collects the
pieces of paper from the players including his or her own which is the correct one. After that, the
leader read aloud the definitions written on the papers and players should guess the correct meaning.
Then the leader tells the meaning of the chosen word and the player who finds the correct definition
will get one point. If no one can find the meaning, the leader will get the point. The game proceeds
in this manner until all members of the game have the opportunity to assume the leadership role for
one iteration. To play this game teacher can strategically incorporate the target vocabulary of the
lesson. This activity is particularly well-suited for language learners as it possesses the ability to
promote creative thinking and brainstorming skills.
2. Word erase is another game to learn, revise vocabulary and especially the correct
pronunciation of the words [3]. This is a great low-tech game that can be enjoyed by students in any
setting without needing special devices, computers, tablets, etc. In order to play this game, students
should be divided into two groups. This game works well with any class size because there is no limit
on how many students can be in one group. First of all, the instructor duplicates the target vocabulary
on the blackboard, writing it in two rows, one for each team. Next, each team should stand forming a
line, leading to the blackboard. When the instructor gives the signal, the first pupil on each team
should go to the blackboard and reads aloud the written words. It would be perfect to ask the pupils
do this in turns in order to avoid noisy classroom. If the participants pronounce the words correctly,
they erase that word and move to the back of the line. The pupils who make a pronunciation mistake
must return to the back of the line without erasing the mispronounced word. The game will continue
in this way all the players taking a turn until one group successfully erases all of the words on their
list. While this game is enjoyable, it also helps pupils enhance their understanding of the target
vocabulary. Focusing on the pronunciation alongside vocabularyis vital, as mispronunciations can
lead to confusion while communicating in the target language.
Apart from this kind of little preparation word games, educators can utilize different types of
puzzles to increase, practice and revise vocabulary in the English and other language classes. For
instance, scanwords and crosswords can be useful to improve the spelling of the words while
anagrams (rearranging the letters of one word to make another word such as cat and act) can boost
creative thinking and help pupils learn word formation. Playing games related to vocabulary
encourage learners to participate in the activities/games without being afraid of making mistakes or
298
speaking in front of the class. Moreover, pupils repeat the words in a fun context while playing which
helps learners improve memorization. Also, word games are beneficial to activate some parts of the
human brain which are associated with memory, critical thinking and language practicing. To
identify, word games requires actively remembering and repeating the words and this repetition
strengthens memory by making them easy to recall later. In addition, pupils have to think and analyze
quickly to play games which activates the functions of the brain.
Learning vocabulary through fun and stimulating activities can motivate learners to learn the
new words and keep practicing by making vocabulary learning process more enjoyable. In fact,
focusing on the activity during the game can be a reason for students to forget daily life pressure and
problems. Therefore, playing a game reduces stress and creates a relaxing and calm environment to
study. Despite the statements mentioned above, some people think that playing games during the
lessons is suitable for only children. I disagree with this statement because adult learners should also
be engaged in the activities while learning language. Precisely, adults also need motivation,
encouragement and courage to learn something new. It is important to sharpen the mind, activate the
brain and improve memory for adults to learn a language successfully. Accordingly, taking into
account all the advantages stated above, word games should be used not only for children but also for
secondary and high school students so as to enhance vocabulary learning.
In conclusion, word games transform vocabulary learning process into an enjoyable and
interactive experience for learners of all ages. They provide a useful workout for learners’ brain that
lead to improved memory. Interestingly, gamification has the power to spark learners’ curiosity and
provide an engaging approach that can motivate anyone to learn deeper. Additionally, playing with
words can be a relaxing experience that also boosts vocabulary, lowering stress and anxiety.

USING AUTHENTIC MATERIALS IN TEACHING PROCESS
Baydullayeva Biybipatima Xasan qizi,
2nd year student atNukus State Pedagogical Institute
The primary goal of this thesis is to evaluate the effectiveness of integrating authentic materials
into language teaching methodologies. Specifically, it aims to assess how authentic materials impact
learners’ linguistic proficiency, communicative competence, and cultural understanding.
Additionally, the research seeks to identify strategies for effectively selecting, adapting, and
implementing authentic materials in language classrooms. By addressing both the theoretical
framework and practical implications, this study aims to provide insights that can inform language
educators’ pedagogical practices and contribute to the enhancement of language teaching
methodologies. Ultimately, the thesis endeavors to promote more engaging, relevant, and effective
language learning experiences for students.
The topic of using authentic materials in the teaching process is highly relevant in the field of
education and language learning.[1;2] Authentic materials, such as real-life texts, videos, and audio
recordings, provide students with exposure to genuine language use and cultural context, enhancing
their language acquisition and cultural understanding.[2;4462] In the current globalized and
interconnected world, the ability to understand and communicate in authentic language is crucial.
Therefore, studying the effectiveness of integrating authentic materials in teaching can significantly
impact language education practices, pedagogy, and curriculum development, making it an important
focus area for research and thesis exploration.
This thesis employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative
research techniques to comprehensively investigate the utilization of authentic materials in the
teaching process. Initially, a thorough literature review establishes the theoretical framework and
