English folk tales stand out among the fairy-tale heritage of
other nations for their relative simplicity of structure; single-
plot works are the most common among them. This article
analyzes the introduction and initial part of English folk tales
and explores their uniqueness. Examples demonstrate how
opening fragments are used in English folk tales.

Once...
Once upon a time, and a very good time it was, though it was neither in my time
nor in your time nor in any one else's time...
Once upon a time, and be sure 't was a long time ago...
One fine summer's day...
long years ago...
not long ago...
Last Sunday morning at six o'clock in the evening...
Long ago, in my grandmother's time...
Once in these parts, and not so long gone neither...
Once on a time and twice on a time, and all times together as ever I heard tell of...
Centuries of years ago, when almost all this part of the country was wilderness...
Once upon a time, when all big folks were wee ones and all lies were true...
Аyrim bоshlаmаlаr аniq bir vаqtgа ishоrа qilаdiki, ulаr оrqаli ertаkning qаysi

Long before Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table
When good King Arthur reigned...
In the days of the great Prince Arthur...
In the reign of the famous King Edward III...
Before the days of William the Conqueror...
In the reign of King John...
In the old days when London Bridge was lined with shops from one end to the

When good King Arthur reigned, there lived near the Land's End of England, in the
county of Cornwall, a farmer who had one only son called Jack (Jack The Giant-Killer) [5]
In Bamborough Castle once lived a king who had a fair wife and two children, a son
named Childe Wynd and a daughter named Margaret (The Laidly Worm of Spindleston
Heugh) [5]
Once upon a time, there was a mighty baron in the North Countrie who was a great
magician that knew everything that would come to pass (The Fish And The Ring) [5].
At Hilton Hall, long years ago, there lived a Brownie that was the contrariest
Brownie you ever knew (The Cauld Lad of Hilton) [5].
Bоshlаmаsiz kеlgаn ertаklаrdа hаrаkаt vоqеlikning o‘zidаn bоshlаnаdi:
A lad named Jack was once so unhappy at home through his father's ill-treatment,
that he made up his mind to run away and seek his fortune in the wide world (The Ass,
The Table, And The Stick) [5].
Dame Goody was a nurse that looked after sick people, and minded babies. One
night she was woke up at midnight, and when she went downstairs, she saw a strange
squinny-eyed, little ugly old fellow, who asked her to come to his wife who was too ill to
mind her baby (Fairy Ointment) [5].
A girl once went to the fair to hire herself for servant. At last a funny-looking old
gentleman engaged her, and took her home to his house. When she got there, he told her
that he had something to teach her, for that in his house he had his own names for things
(Master Of All Masters) [5].

Ertaklardagi boshlama va tugallama formulalarining mazmuni va funksional-
pragmatik tomonlarini o‘rganish an’anaviy formulalar tipologiyasini ishlab chiqish imkonini
beradi. N.M. Gerasimova tugallama formulaning quyidagi turlarini aniqlaydi: mavjudlik
formulalari; hikoyaning tugash momentini ta’kidlaydigan formulalar, hikoyachining
“mukofoti” uchun formulalar; sovg‘alarni olish va yo‘qotish formulalari. [1, b. 18]
Mahalliy an’analarda xalq ertaklarining mavjudligining o‘ziga xos xususiyatlarini
o‘rganish an’anaviy ertak formulalarini boshqa etnik madaniyatning ertak janridagi
asarlarning bir xil elementlaridan ajratib turadigan o‘ziga xos xususiyatlarini aniqlash va
tushuntirish imkonini beradi. Muayyan turdagi formulalarning mavjudligi yoki yo‘qligi,
ularning tuzilishi va funksiyasi etnik guruh mavjudligining madaniy va tarixiy
sharoitlariga va ertak janri rivojlanishining genetik qonuniyatlariga bog‘liq.

Then Jack showed his mother his golden harp, and what with showing that and
selling the golden eggs, Jack and his mother became very rich, and he married a great
princess, and they lived happy ever after. (Jack and the Beanstalk) [5].
So married they were, and the whole kingdom was filled with joy at the wedding.
Furthermore, the king bestowed on Jack a noble habitation, with a very beautiful estate
thereto belonging, where he and his lady lived in great joy and happiness all the rest of
their days (‘Jack the Giant
-
Killer’) [7].
And off they went, and were not long before they reached their journey's end,
when out comes the young wife to meet him with a fi ne jolly, bonny young son, and they
all lived happy ever afterwards (‘Jack and his Golden Snuff

Box’) [7].
Hodisaning muvaffaqiyatli natijasi boshqa standartlashtirilgan formulalar bilan
kiritilishi ham mumkin:
Out the little old Woman jumped; and whether she broke her neck in the fall; or ran
into the wood and was lost there; or found her way out of the wood, and was taken up by the
constable and sent to the House of Correction for a vagrant as she was, I cannot tell. But the
Three Bears never saw anything more of her (‘The Story of the Three Bears’) [5].
Well, when that heard her, that gave an awful shriek and away that fl ew into the
dark, and she never saw it any more (‘Tom Tit Tot’) [5].
So Molly took the ring to the king, and she was married to his youngest son, and
she never saw the giant again (‘Molly Whuppie’) [5].
An’ they never sid no more on ‘em atter than, but wenten back to the Gorsty Bonk,
an’ ad’n some pace an’ quietnis (‘The Boogies an’ the Salt

So they reached home and the good queen their mother, and Burd Ellen never

So they went ho’am together, an’ a niver wanted to buy a pottle o’ brains age’an,

Reverend Leonard Hotchkiss, Headmaster 1735
(‘The Devil in Wem’) [6].
And, sure enough, the grave is there, and covered with a great coned slab of Horsham
stone. But it is without inscription, and though many are proud to show it, this hedger was
the only one I ever met who gave the hero ‘a local habitation and name.’ To all the rest he
was simply ‘The Man who killed the Dragon.’ (‘The Knucker of Lyminster’) [3].
But he kept the Boggard’s jagged scythe and hung it in his barn. And now his
grandson shows it proudly to his friends to testify to the truth of the story, and he warns
young farmers not to be frightened by bullies, for a wise man will get the better of them
(‘Tops or Butts?’) [3].
They decided to remember this event by carving a special pew end and setting it in
the church. Now, if you go to Zennor Church you can go through the creaky door, and
once your eyes get used to the dim light, you'll see a pew there with a carving of a
mermaid on it, which the villagers made in memory of Matty. And now you know that
story to tell to your friends and family (‘The Story of Zennor’) [6].
Tugallama formulalarda, voqea-hodisaning haqiqiyligini oshirish uchun hikoyachi
ertak qahramonlarning keyingi taqdiriga murojaat qiladi, ular nisbatan yaxshi yoki fojiali
rivojlanishi mumkin, bu oqibatlarning tavsifi dalillar, mantiqiy asoslash yoki shaxsiy
baholashlar bilan birga keladi:
The curse lay on the family for nine generations, and indeed from Sir John Lambton
himself until Henry Lambton, Esq. M.P., no Lambton did die in his bed. The fi rst died in a
hunting accident, the last on crossing the new bridge at Lambton on 26 June 1761, while
many between were killed in battle. One General Lambton, who had survived battle and
lived a long life, was at last confined to bed with a terrible illness. Though in great agony
and though his doctors could not believe how he managed to keep breath in his div, he
survived until after much pleading his servants lifted him out of his bed
–
and as soon as
they did, he was released into death (‘The Lambton Worm’) [6].
But after a while the Squire thort it all over, and he married Mary the fearless girl,
so arter all he got both bags of gold, and he used to tell her off good and proper
whensoever he got drunk. And I think she deserved it, for deceiving the old ghost (‘Mary
Who Were Afeard o’ Nothin’’) [3].
But the boy was never seen again, nor the voice ever heard, even on the darkest
night. And to this day Devon folk will swear that it was not the hooting of an owl, but the
calling of the piskies by the river (‘Jan Coo’) [3].
Ertakdagi qahramonlarning taqdiridan tashqari, tugallamalarda e’tibor hozirgi
kungacha bo‘lgan voqealarning takrorlanishiga qaratilgan bo‘lishi mumkin. Shunday
qilib, vaqt doirasi kengayadi, ikki dunyoning chegaralari aralashib ketadi va fantastik
dunyoning kundalik haqiqatga bostirib kirishiga to‘sqinlik qilmaydi. Voqealarning
cheksiz uzoq davom etishini ko‘rsatish, odatda, rivoyatni vaqt chegarasidan tashqariga
olib chiqadi, inson ongi bilan shartli ravishda ajratilgan o‘tmish, hozirgi va kelajakni
abadiylikka birlashtiradi:
So beware you idle traveler on the Yorkshire moors; keep a wary eye out for the
Boggart of Hellen Pot (‘The Boggart of Hellen Pot’) [3].
As for the gooseherd boy, he was never seen again, though the memory of his
songs lingered on in the hearts of all who had heard them. The old lord went back to his
castle and kept his strange promise never to set eyes on his granddaughter, a promise
that caused him more tears. If you pass that way, you may see him in the window crying
for what might have been (‘Tattercoats’) [7].

Kate Crackernuts and her sick sister Anne lives as long as there are people with breath in
their div and courage in their hearts to tell it to you (‘Kate Crackernuts’) [18, c. 114].
But what the Devil doesn't understand is that he isn't just fighting the hill and the
rocks. The people of Shropshire are a stubborn bunch
–
steadfast, sturdy, and true
–
and
the land relies as much on them as they rely on the land. As long as there is one person
with a love of the land, the hills and rocks, the moors and woods, one person with no
room for the Devil in their heart, then the Stiperstones, Shropshire, and England will be
safe, no matter how long the Devil sits on his chair and how hard he tries to defeat the hill
(‘The Devil and the Stiperstones’) [18, c. 87].
Ayrim xolatlarda qahramonning avlodlari taqdiri haqiqatda mavjud bo‘lgan va o‘z
qobiliyatlari bilan ma’lum bir hududda taniqli bo‘lgan oilaviy urug‘larga borib taqaladi va
ishonchli artefakt mavjudligi bilan mustahkamlanadi:
Lutey’s div was never found and, in spite of every precaution, once in nine years,
some of his descendants find a grave in the sea. All the same, the Lutey family is still well
known in Cornwall for their remarkable powers of healing; one still keeps the
merrymaid’s comb (which some people are unbelieving enough to say is only part of a
shark’s jaw; but unbelieving people have no imagination) (‘Lutey and the Merrymaid’)
[12, c. 45].

In ran father and son, laughing and saying, “See, what fine things the thunder has
brought us!” Then the bird rattled the millstone against the eaves of the house a third
time; and the stepmother said: “It thunders again, perhaps the thunder has brought
something for me,” and she ran out; but the moment she stepped outside the door, down
fell the millstone on her head; and so she died. (The Rose-Tree).

On this the bird laughed and laughed, and Mr. Vinegar, falling into a violent rage,
threw the stick at its head. The stick lodged in the tree, and he returned to his wife
without money, cow, bagpipes, gloves, or stick, and she instantly gave him such a sound
cudgelling that she almost broke every bone in his skin. (Mr Vinegar)

So there was a whole lot of sillies bigger than them three sillies at home. So the
gentleman turned back home again and married the farmer's daughter, and if they didn't
live happy for ever after, that's nothing to do with you or me. (The Three Sillies).
“I cannot see him,” said the farmer.
“Shade your eyes with your hand, and you'll soon see a man flying away from you.”
Sure enough he did so, for Jack leaped on the horse, and rode away with it. The
farmer walked home without his horse.
“You are a bigger fool than I am,” said the wife; “for I did only one foolish thing, and
you have done two.” (Jack Hannaford)

XULOSA
Shunday qilib, stereotipik tugallama formulalar bilan bir qatorga, ingliz tilidagi
ertaklar tuzilmaviy jihatdan xilma-xil va tasniflash qiyin tugallamalari bilan ajralib turadi.
Ularning ajralib turadigan xususiyati xronotopik noaniqlikning umumiy zaiflashishi
bo‘lib, u ma’
lum darajada hikoya qiluvchining diskursiv strategiyalari bilan belgilanadiki,
bunda hikoyachi bayon qilinayotgan voqea-
hodisalar xarakterining ishonchliligiga e’tibor
qaratadi.
Makon va zamon belgilarining qayd etilishi ertaklarga xos bo‘lgan fantastik
xususiyatning sezilarli darajada zaiflashishiga olib keladiki, bu turli darajadagi aniqlik
bilan an’anaviy formulalarda kuzatiladi (An’ I call’d wife, an’ she said it war t’ Bargest, but
ah’ve nivver seed it since; an’ that’s a true story). Tugallama formulalardagi xronotopik
mavhumlik darajasini pasaytirishga hikoyachining pretsedent ismlarga, pretsedent
holatlar, rasmiy hujjatlar, tabiiy va g‘ayritabiiy artefaktlarga murojaat qilishi orqali
erishiladi va leksik, grammatik va stilistik vositalar yordamida tegishli moddiy timsolni
olinadi.
