INTRODUCTION

The study of polyfunctional words represents one of the most complex areas

in English lexicography. These linguistic units, characterized by their ability to serve

multiple grammatical and semantic functions, pose significant challenges for

lexicographers in their efforts to document and represent them accurately in

dictionaries. The multifaceted nature of such words necessitates a comprehensive

approach to their analysis and documentation, considering both their semantic

variety and contextual dependencies.

For example, the word "round" demonstrates clear polyfunctionality in

English:

- as an adjective: "a round table";

- as a noun: "the first round of talks";

- as a verb: "to round the corner";

- as a preposition: "to walk round the park"[Jackson, H., 2013, pp. 47-49].

The phenomenon of polyfunctionality in English has been extensively

studied by numerous scholars. Traditional approaches to lexicography, as outlined

by scholars such as Zgustaand Landau, have emphasized the importance of

hierarchical organization in dictionary entries. Modern corpus linguistics has further

enhanced our understanding of polyfunctional words through data-driven analysis of

usage patterns. The advent of electronic corpora has revolutionized how

lexicographers identify and document various functions of these words.

The study was undertaken for several key reasons:

1. To address the challenges in lexicographic documentation of

polyfunctional words in English dictionaries, as these words present unique

complexities due to their multiple semantic and grammatical functions.

2. To examine and evaluate current practices in documenting polyfunctional

words across major English dictionaries, identifying both strengths and limitations

of existing approaches.

METHODS

This research employed a comprehensive mixed-method approach to analyze

polyfunctional words in English lexicography, combining both quantitative and

qualitative methodologies.

1. Dictionary Analysis:

A systematic examination was conducted of three major English dictionaries

[1, pp. 214-216]:

- Oxford English Dictionary (OED Online, 2023 edition);

- Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary (4th edition);

- Collins English Dictionary (13th edition).

The analysis focused on:

a) entry structure organization

b) definition patterns

c) cross-referencing systems

d) usage examples

e) semantic categorization

2. Corpus-Based Analysis:

The study utilized two major corpora [9, pp. 112-115]:

A. British National Corpus (BNC):

- analysis of written texts (90% of data);

- analysis of spoken discourse (10% of data);

- focus on frequency patterns;

- contextual usage analysis.

B. Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA):

- sample size: 500 most frequent polyfunctional words;

- time (period): 2000-2023;

- genre distribution: academic, fiction, newspapers, spoken;

3. Data collection procedures

The research followed a structured approach to data collection [3, pp. 95-98]:

Step 1: Identification of polyfunctional words

- frequency screening;

- function verification;

- context analysis.

Step 2: Classification of functions

- grammatical roles;

- semantic roles;

- contextual variations.

Step 3: Documentation analysis

- entry structure;

- definition patterns;

- example selection;

- cross-reference systems.

4. Analytical Framework

The analysis was conducted using a three-tier framework [4, pp. 123-125]:

A. Structural Analysis:

- morphological features;

- syntactic patterns;

- semantic relationships.

B. Functional Analysis:

- grammatical functions;

- semantic roles;

- pragmatic use.

C. Contextual Analysis:

- usage patterns;

- register variation;

- collocational preferences.

5. Data Processing

Data processing involved both manual and computational methods [3, pp. 84-

86]:

A. Manual Analysis:

- entry structure evaluation;

- definition of quality assessment;

- example relevance checking.

B. Computational Analysis:

- frequency calculations;

- pattern recognition;

- statistical significance testing.

6. Validation Procedures:

The research employed multiple validation methods [8, pp. 98-100]:

- cross-verification of findings;

- peer review of classifications;

- expert consultation;

- inter-rater reliability checks.

7. Limitations:

The study acknowledges several methodological limitations:

- time constraints in corpus analysis;

- limited access to historical data;

- focus on contemporary usage;

- sample size restrictions.

This methodology was designed to ensure comprehensive coverage of the

research objectives while maintaining scientific rigor and reliability in data collection

and analysis.

RESULTS

The analysis of polyfunctional words in English lexicography revealed

several significant findings across multiple dimensions:

1. Patterns in Dictionary Representation

Our examination of major English dictionaries (Oxford English Dictionary,

Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary, and Collins English Dictionary) revealed

systematic differences in how polyfunctional words are represented [1, pp. 214-216]:

2. Frequency Distribution of Functions

A corpus analysis of the 500 most frequent polyfunctional words showed the

following distribution patterns [9, pp. 156-158]:

- primary function: 45% average usage;

- secondary function: 32% average usage;

- tertiary function: 15% average usage;

- other functions: 8% average usage.

3. Semantic Organization Patterns

The study identified three main approaches to organizing polyfunctional

word entries [4, pp. 128-130]:

a) part-of-speech-based organization (traditional approach);

b) frequency-based organization (modern approach);

c) semantic network organization (emerging approach).

4. Context Dependency

Analysis of contextual patterns revealed that:

- 78% of polyfunctional words require specific context for function

identification;

- 65% show regular patterns in function switching;

- 45% demonstrate predictable semantic relationships between functions.

5. Documentation Innovations

Modern lexicographic practices have developed several effective approaches

[14, pp. 398-400]:

a) Cross-referencing systems:

- internal references: 85% increase in usage;

- external references: 42% increase in implementation.

b) Digital enhancements:

- interactive visualizations;

- hyperlinked relations;

- multimedia examples.

6. Corpus-Based Findings

background image

MODERN EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT

Выпуск журнала №-20

Часть–4_ Февраль –2025

355

The corpus analysis revealed significant patterns in polyfunctional word

usage [3, pp. 105-108]:

- historical development trends;

- contemporary usage patterns;

- register variation;

- collocational preferences.

7. Impact of Digital Platforms

Digital lexicography has enabled new features [2, pp. 170-172]:

- dynamic entry organization;

- user-adaptive displays;

- integrated corpus examples;

- interactive semantic networks.

These findings demonstrate a clear evolution in the treatment of

polyfunctional words in English lexicography, with modern approaches increasingly

incorporating corpus data and digital capabilities to provide more comprehensive and

accessible representations.

DISCUSSION

The findings suggest several implications for lexicographic practice:

1. The need for more sophisticated digital platforms capable of representing

complex semantic networks.

2. The importance of incorporating user feedback in refining polyfunctional

word entries.

3. The potential for artificial intelligence in identifying and categorizing word

functions.

The study of polyfunctional words in English lexicography reveals the

evolving nature of dictionary compilation and the need for continued innovation in

representing complex linguistic phenomena. As language continues to evolve,

lexicographers must adapt their methods to effectively capture and present the

multiple functions of words. This research contributes to the ongoing development
