Abstract

This article explores the crucial role of metaphors in sociopragmatics, emphasizing how metaphorical thinking shapes social meaning, interactional norms, and communicative behavior within cultural contexts. Drawing on cognitive and cultural linguistic perspectives, the study demonstrates that metaphors function as essential tools for conceptualizing abstract social concepts such as power, politeness, hierarchy, and interpersonal relationships. Metaphors not only encode cultural values and collective experiences but also guide face-management strategies, influence politeness conventions, and facilitate indirect communication. Furthermore, metaphor systems vary across cultures, making them central to understanding intercultural communication and preventing pragmatic misunderstanding. By highlighting the interplay between metaphor, cognition, and social norms, the article contributes to a deeper understanding of how language constructs and negotiates social reality in both interpersonal and institutional discourse.
