Introduction
The main essence of the concept of chronotope
The concept of chronotope (from Greek "chronos" — time and "topos" — place) originated
in Bakhtin's aesthetic theory and is used in literature as a unified form of time and space. The
chronotope, in literature, represents not only the external appearance of time and space, but also
their internal, spiritual, spiritual changes. Bakhtin saw the chronotope as an important factor in the
structure of works and reflecting the author's worldview. Vodolazkin's novel" Brisbane " is one of
the works that perfectly captures the chronotope. In this novel, time and space are not subject to
each other, but are transformed symmetrically.
Brisbane novel: general description and theme
E. Vodolazkin's novel" Brisbane " tells the story of events that take place in Brisbane,
Australia in the late 20th century, as well as elsewhere. The main events and characters in the
novel are mainly concerned with scientific, philosophical and ethnic issues. Vodolazkin in this
work focuses heavily on the search for the identity of the individual, the reconstruction of history
and time, as well as the analysis of the relationship between the world and man.
At the heart of the novel is a sequence of events that unfold over several centuries. Also,

in the novel, Time is worked with a chronotope, which reflects not only in appearance, but also in
the psychological state of the individual. This novel describes the external and internal changes of
Science and philosophical views on the one hand and human history on the other.
Chronotope's roles in the novel
1.
Interplay of time and space:
In Brisbane, there is not so much constant interaction and harmony between time and space
as opposing concepts. Vodolazkin uses time as a formative factor in the work, and he also refers
to time not only as historical changes, but also as changes in individual's inner world.
At the beginning of the novel, time and space are clearly separated from each other, but
later the boundaries between them are eroded and connected with the inner world of the individual.
The change in time changes the characters ' mental state, their goals in life, and their outlook on
life.
2.
Role of the city of Brisbane:
The city of Brisbane is the main setting of the novel, in which events unfold. The peculiarity
of this space is that it is used not only as an external space, but also as a symbol that reflects the
inner world of the characters. The city of Brisbane changes over time: while at first this city appears
as a symbol of new opportunities, science and development, later it becomes the center of each
character's personal quest.
Every event taking place in the city, every novelty helps to recreate the characters ' memory
and experiences. In this, the city constantly changes its topographic state and merges with the
memory of each person.
3.
Chronotope's reflection of internal changes in time:
In the novel, the chronological direction of time is clear, but this time has been altered
through individual experiences and memories. Vodolazkin's style tightly regulated time, but he
also linked the internal and external changes of time with each other. This state of affairs shows
through the work the person's feelings about memory and time. Time is reflected not only as a
biographical process, but also as an internal development and transformation of the character.
4.
Memory of characters and awareness of time:
The characters in the novel contain a wide variety of memories and explorations in their
time. Their memories play an important role in realizing themselves and the world around them.
Over time, their inner world changes, but there is every memory and information that finds a new
meaning in time.
The symbolic significance of the chronotope
In Vodolazkin's Brisbane novel, The chronotope not only reflects the transformation of
time and space, but also explores through them deep philosophical questions about the world and

humanity. The change in time and space shapes the characters ' personal and social states,
providing a thematic uplift of the novel.
The novel's vision of time and space is also important in exploring questions about history
and the future of humanity. Time and space coexist, and their interaction embodies the central
ideas of the novel.
Conclusion
E. The peculiarities of the chronotope in Vodolazkin's Brisbane novel are not only
associated with an individual depiction of time and space, but also represent their interaction and
approach to human history. Vodolazkin, using Bakhtin's concept of chronotope, illuminates the
transformation of time and space not only externally, but also internally, revealing the deep
philosophical and aesthetic facets of the novel.
