Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the clinical effectiveness of septoplasty in patients suffering from nasal obstruction due to deviated nasal septum (DNS). The research seeks to evaluate preoperative and postoperative symptoms including nasal airflow, snoring, headache, and sleep quality, using validated clinical questionnaires and nasal endoscopy. Additionally, the study aims to determine the correlation between symptom relief and the extent of septal deviation correction. By analyzing outcomes across a diverse patient group, this study intends to contribute practical evidence toward improving surgical techniques and patient satisfaction. Research Objective

The aim of this study is to investigate the clinical effectiveness of septoplasty in patients

suffering from nasal obstruction due to deviated nasal septum (DNS). The research seeks to
evaluate preoperative and postoperative symptoms including nasal airflow, snoring, headache, and
sleep quality, using validated clinical questionnaires and nasal endoscopy. Additionally, the study
aims to determine the correlation between symptom relief and the extent of septal deviation
correction. By analyzing outcomes across a diverse patient group, this study intends to contribute
practical evidence toward improving surgical techniques and patient satisfaction. The primary
objective of this study is to assess the clinical efficacy and long-term outcomes of septoplasty in
patients suffering from nasal obstruction caused by a deviated nasal septum. Specifically, the study
aims to:

Evaluate changes in nasal breathing and airflow after septoplasty using both objective

clinical examinations and subjective patient-reported outcomes (such as the NOSE scale).

Investigate the impact of septoplasty on associated symptoms, including sleep

disturbances, snoring, facial pain, and headache.

Analyze patient satisfaction post-surgery and identify the correlation between anatomical

correction and perceived symptom relief.

Examine any complications or limitations related to the surgical procedure and propose

recommendations for surgical best practices.

Determine how timely surgical intervention improves patients' overall quality of life,

including physical, social, and psychological well-being.

By fulfilling these goals, the research seeks to reinforce septoplasty as a safe and effective

intervention in otorhinolaryngological practice and provide evidence-based recommendations for
its wider application in both clinical and educational settings.

Materials and Methods

This prospective study included 60 patients (aged 18–50 years) diagnosed with

symptomatic deviated nasal septum who underwent septoplasty at the Department of
Otorhinolaryngology No. 2, Samarkand State Medical University. Preoperative assessment
included nasal endoscopy, anterior rhinoscopy, and patient-reported symptom scoring using the
Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) scale. Septoplasty was performed under general
anesthesia by experienced ENT surgeons. Postoperative follow-up was conducted at 1, 3, and 6
months. The outcomes were measured based on changes in NOSE scores and patient-reported
improvements in quality of life.

Results

A significant improvement in nasal airflow and symptom relief was observed in the

majority of patients. Preoperative NOSE scores averaged 70±10, which improved to 20±8 at 6
months postoperatively (p<0.001). Approximately 85% of patients reported substantial relief from
nasal obstruction, and over 60% reported improvement in sleep quality and reduction in snoring.

There were no major intraoperative or postoperative complications noted, and graft

displacement was not observed. Minor complications such as nasal crusting and transient
discomfort were managed conservatively.

Discussion

The findings from this study affirm the efficacy of septoplasty as a primary treatment for

nasal obstruction caused by septal deviation. The significant reduction in NOSE scores
postoperatively suggests marked improvement in patient-reported outcomes. Septoplasty also
appears to positively affect sleep-related symptoms, possibly by enhancing nasal patency during
respiration. The lack of serious complications supports the safety profile of the procedure when
performed with proper technique. Furthermore, the consistency of outcomes across different age
and gender groups underscores its broad applicability. Patient education and adherence to
postoperative care protocols were crucial to optimizing recovery and minimizing discomfort.

Conclusion

Septoplasty significantly improves nasal airflow and quality of life in patients with deviated

nasal septum. The procedure is safe, effective, and associated with a high satisfaction rate. Clinical
success is strongly linked to precise preoperative assessment, surgical expertise, and postoperative
follow-up. This study supports the continued use of septoplasty as a standard intervention for DNS-
related nasal obstruction and highlights its role in improving sleep quality and reducing snoring,
thereby contributing to overall patient well-being. The findings of our study demonstrate that
septoplasty is a highly effective surgical procedure for alleviating nasal obstruction caused by a
deviated nasal septum. Significant improvements were observed in both objective clinical
parameters and subjective symptom scores, such as reduced NOSE scores, enhanced nasal airflow,
and better sleep quality.

Patients experienced a notable decrease in associated symptoms like snoring, mouth

breathing, and sinus discomfort, which substantially improved their daily activities and quality of
life. Importantly, no serious postoperative complications were reported, indicating that with proper
technique and postoperative care, septoplasty remains a safe and reliable surgical solution.

This study emphasizes the importance of accurate patient selection, thorough preoperative

evaluation, and adherence to evidence-based surgical protocols to maximize outcomes.
Furthermore, septoplasty not only resolves physical symptoms but also contributes positively to
the psychological and social aspects of patient health.

In conclusion, septoplasty should be considered a first-line surgical option in patients with

symptomatic nasal septal deviation, and it plays a crucial role in modern otolaryngology practice
for enhancing respiratory function.
