Annotation.
This conference thesis examines how lexicographic methods
can improve the translation of linguistic terminology between English and
Uzbek. With growing academic exchange and English-medium instruction in
Uzbekistan, the precise and culturally appropriate translation of specialized
terms is essential. This study explores current bilingual linguistic dictionaries,
identifies common translation errors and gaps, and presents lexicographic
strategies for enhancing accuracy and consistency.
Key words:
lexicography, term translation, English and Uzbek dictionaries,
bilingual linguistic dictionaries, linguistic terms, translation challenges.

Ushbu konferensiya tezisida ingliz va o‘zbek tillari orasida
lingvistik atamalarni tarjima qilishda leksikografik usullarni qo‘llash orqali
tarjima aniqligini qanday oshirish mumkinligi o‘rganiladi. O‘zbekistonda ingliz
tilida ta’lim olib borish va xalqaro akademik almashinuvlarning ortib
borayotganligi ayniqsa maxsus atamalarni aniq va madaniy jihatdan mos tarjima
qilishni muhim qiladi. Mazkur tadqiqot mavjud ikki tilli lingvistik lug‘atlarni
tahlil qiladi, tarjima xatolari va bo‘shliqlarni aniqlaydi hamda tarjima aniqligi va
izchilligini oshirishga xizmat qiluvchi leksikografik yondashuvlarni taklif etadi.
Kalit so‘zlar:
leksikografiya, atamalar tarjimasi, inglizcha va o‘zbekcha
lug‘atlar, ikki tilli lingvistik lug‘atlar, lingvistik atamalar, tarjima muammolari.

By integrating corpus data, user needs analysis, and terminological
standardization, this research proposes a framework for refining bilingual
dictionaries that support education and research. The thesis calls for a
collaborative national effort in Uzbekistan to update and digitalize lexicographic
resources, ensuring accessibility and global relevance.
As linguistic science develops rapidly in both the English-speaking and
Uzbek academic spheres, the need for high-quality bilingual dictionaries
becomes more urgent. Existing dictionaries often offer word-for-word
equivalents, ignoring context, collocation, or academic precision. As a result,
students, educators, and translators struggle with inconsistent terminology,
leading to confusion in academic discourse.
This thesis investigates how lexicographic research can bridge these gaps
by:
Identifying the most frequent and problematic terms in bilingual
dictionaries;
Evaluating how English linguistic terms are defined and translated into
Uzbek;
Proposing principles for better dictionary compilation based on
international best practices.
Ultimately, the goal is to support linguistic education and professional
translation through improved dictionary design and data-based term
standardization. The research combines qualitative and comparative analysis of
three English–Uzbek bilingual dictionaries (including digital platforms) with
international lexicographic models. Corpus data was drawn from the British
National Corpus and the Uzbek National Corpus, focusing on 50 key linguistic
terms. Evaluation criteria included accuracy, usage examples, and user-
friendliness. Expert interviews with linguists and translators were conducted to
understand the practical challenges of current term usage.
In analyzing the translation of key linguistic terms such as inflection,
derivation, pragmatics, phonotactics, sociolinguistics, and communicative
competence, significant inconsistencies become apparent across English–Uzbek
bilingual resources. For example, inflection is often translated as so‘z o‘zgarishi
or egilish, while derivation is loosely rendered as yasalish, though the semantic
distinction between morphological change and word formation is rarely

explained. Pragmatics appears inconsistently as pragmatika, often without
clarification of its scope involving speaker intention and context. Terms like
phonotactics and communicative competence are either missing or over-
simplified, such as fonotaktika or kommunikativ kompetensiya, without
adequate examples or conceptual grounding. Sociolinguistics is often presented
as sotsiolingvistika, yet lacks cultural contextualization. These challenges stem
from a lack of standardized bilingual term databases, over-reliance on literal
translation or Russian borrowings, and insufficient integration of corpus-based
usage examples in Uzbek lexicographic practice.
Improving linguistic term translation through lexicographic research is
both possible and necessary. A new approach must be:
Corpus-informed which refers to the use of real data to reflect actual
usage;
Pedagogically aligned which addresses the needs of learners and
translators;
Technologically integrated which builds user-friendly digital platforms.
The creation of a centralized, academic English-Uzbek linguistic term
database, accessible through web and mobile platforms, would support teachers,
students, and researchers. This project could be led by linguistic departments of
national universities in cooperation with IT and language professionals. It would
not only aid translation accuracy but also raise Uzbekistan’s visibility in global
linguistic research.
