Annotation.
Comics, animations and cartoons are great ways for students to
learn English. Regardless of age, most students are overwhelmed by a lot of
grammar practice, so we should use different teaching aids to keep students
interested in English. Even students who are reluctant to speak or write English will
be interested in animation, and their dislike of English will instantly turn into a love.
•
Using cartoons would certainly break the monotony of reading text after
text at the English classes
•
Very often, a picture speaks louder than words and has more impact than
just reading the text.
•
It is also believed that the usage of cartoons can reduce boredom and
decrease academic stress and anxiety
Key words:
cartoons, language models, medical content, listening.
RELEVANCE
Students enjoy watching animated shows and videos on TV, on tablets, and on
phones. Videos can motivate students to engage with language so it is easy to
understand why teachers want to bring more videos into their English classrooms.
There are strong pedagogical reasons for including animated videos in your
language teaching. Videos bring language alive. Students can see and hear language
being used in context. Animated videos are ideal for providing language models with
enough context to support meaning, and enough humor to engage students.
The role of a teacher. The teacher is as effective as the cartoon film in
teaching through cartoons, because he is the only person who enables the
learners to comprehend what they watch and hear by using some of the
communicative techniques. The teacher can be a controller, an assessor or
organizer, a prompter and a participant as well. In teaching and learning
vocabulary, cartoon film has some characteristics.
•
The duration of cartoon film is short;
•
The easy vocabulary, it means that it can be used in daily communication;
•
The intonation of speaker is calm and fluent;
•
It has moral values;
The main advantages of cartoons based on medical content are as follows:
They can reveal facts about diseases, anatomy and physiology of the human div
in an interesting way. They are useful for changing behavior and developing

positive attitudes, interests and character of students. They are able to generate
humor and interest in the audience and explain various concepts. They are useful
for providing opportunities for self-expression and creativity for learners.
Sometimes, the animated videos will not work
•
the language maybe too hard
•
the cartoon maybe too long
•
animated video is fast-paced.
In some cases, teachers are successful in finding a video they think could
work with their lesson, they often are not sure how to make the best use of it for
language learning.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Techniques for cartoon implication: Active viewing: where students should
be active while watching the video. That can be possible by answering questions
asked by the teacher, orally. Freeze framing and prediction: it is as easy as pausing
the video and let students make speculations about what will happen. Silent
viewing where the video is played without sound, so students should guess what
happens without hearing the audio played. The sound on and vision off activity,
where students just have to listen to the audio without looking at the picture, in
order to focus more on the listening. The dubbing activity, in which students need
to fill the gaps of a dialogue.
Follow-up activity: as the name says, a follow-up activity might be used to
enhance the comprehension of the video seen. Watching cartoons based on
content in English gives students pleasure from the classes they actively
participate in all tasks during the lesson. Students are very enthusiastic and
communicate in English with their friends. Cartoons are very good at grabbing
attention and motivating students.
CONCLUSION
Based on the above, it can be said that watching cartoons based on content
in English gives students a pleasure to study, and they actively participate in all
tasks during the lesson. The students are very enthusiastic and communicate in
English with their friends. Cartoons are very good at attracting attention and
motivating students.
