An analysis of speaking strategies and useful options to overcome problems
in speaking.
We know that today, with the development of science and technology, the demand for
learning foreign languages, especially English, is increasing. Every field requires to learn
this language and to master the four most important skills in this language: writing,
speaking, listening and reading.
Therefore, although many effective options and methods of learning foreign language
have been created today, there are still challenges that almost every English language
learner may face. In this article, I will discuss the causes and solutions to the problems
we may face in speaking, which is one of the four important skills in the English language.
It's no secret that speaking English fluently and correctly is one of the problems that
always plagues us. Many language learners, especially pre-intermediate and intermediate
level learners, understand English speakers, but cannot fully express their thoughts in this
language and complain about using many pauses, simple sentences and speaking in an
unintelligible way. There are several reasons for such a problem:
The first reason is not taking time into account and thinking so much. When we interact
with a person, we think a lot when answering his questions. When we are trying to give
a complete answer, we don't notice the passing of time, and this causes the person we are
talking to to get bored and even give up on the conversation. We can write a very good
paragraph, but we can't do it in the process of speaking. The reason is time. Yes, when
21
we write a paragraph we have enough time to think about grammar rules, structure and
which words to use, but during a conversation we don't have time to think.
Another reason is that we are accustomed to focus a lot on grammar. Putting the thought
we want to express in our mind into special grammatical patterns and formulas, spending
a lot of time remembering these formulas is another mistake we make.
Also, we know that one of the most important factors in learning a language is knowing
a lot of words related to that language, that is, having a rich vocabulary. Not having a
sufficient level of vocabulary makes our speech boring and unintelligible.
Furthermore, lack of confidence is very common problem in speaking. Many foreign
language learners claim that they know the language they are learning well enough, but
are unable to speak fluently due to lack of confidence or shyness during conversation.
This will cause our udience to have a negative reaction to our knowledge and skill.
Above, I have highlighted the most common mistakes that we make in the conversation
process. Although these situations seem difficult to change, based on
my own experience and research, I know that there are sevaral useful strategies to addres
this problem.
The first option is that if we want to improve our speaking skill, we should learn
everything by topic. This is one of the most important rules. When we are communicating
with someone, there will definitely be a topic for conversation. It may be friendship,
education, health, or the environment. Our task is to learn the words step by step, based
on these topics. For this, we should keep a notebook and divide it into parts based on
different topics. We should write down each new word we learn under the appropriate
headings in this notebook.
Another point is that we should learn to write before speaking. Because when we write,
we have enough time to think about grammar and vocabulary, but when we speak, we do
not have. We write a topic which we want in our notebook, and write adjectives, idioms,
and prepositions related to this topic. We should write them down and use them in our
22
speech. If the words and phrases we are looking for are very simple, then we refer to
ozdic.com. On this site we can find many adjectives, verbs and phrases and even
sentences related to our desired topic. By using them, we can independently make
complex and meaningful sentences. We write down the ones we like the most under the
appropriate topic in your notebook and use them in the speech process. We need a lot of
adjectives, verbs and phrases and they are pre-fabricated sentences, that is, sentences that
we prepared earlier or before. When we are speaking, we may not have enough time or
ideas to form complex sentences. Even so, we can refer to the sentences and phrases we
have made up earlier. When we are talking to someone about one topic, our mind
immediately goes to the section where the words and phrases are written about that topic
and scans them. We quickly find the necessary sentence and make sentences by using
them.
Lastly, practice is the one of the most important features in speaking process. We may
know English grammar, vocabulary, and structure very well, but we won't be able to use
them in speaking because we haven't practiced much. The more we practice, the more
fluent speaker we will become. One of the most frequently asked questions is: "I want to
practice, but I don't have any partner. I'm alone. What should I do?!" We do not need a
partner. We can practice alone and we can just talk to ourselves. During communication
with ourselves, we will have time to correct our mistakes and think a little. We should
imagine a situation and try to think of a dialogue in that situation. We imagine ourselves
in the same situation and start communicating. By repeating these exercises many times,
we will be able to speak smoothly and fluently and without mistakes in front of any person
or audience.
The discussion in this article has given an overview of some causes of having difficulties
in speaking and several detailed options to address this problem and achieving fluent
speech by following some basic rules.I firmly believe that everyone can change his level
of knowledge by trying hard and using some unconventional methods for learning.I think
that I have given a plenty of anomalous options to improve speaking skill, by using them
every learner can achive his or her targeted goal.
