Abstract:
Nowadays, students are surrounded by information from several sources and
reaching information becomes more important every day. In order to cope with the
challenges of this intensity of information faced by students at school which they will
also face in the World, they need to develop different and more useful methods than
those previously used. The aim of this research is to reveal how the process of using
watch movie clips as a strategy in improving students’ listening skill in teaching and
learning activity, find out whether the use of watch movie clips as a strategy can
improve B 1 level learners’ listening skill or not.
Key words:
language learning, listening skills, feature movie clips in language
learning, audio-visual materials
The skills of “speaking” and “listening” in learning a foreign language
necessitate the students not only to add new vocal skills on the sounds they hear and
innate but also to use those skills to understand the new voices they hear in the second
language and try to spell that with a voice close to that language; and the purpose in
teaching "listening" is to provide the students with an ability to recognize the sounds in
a foreign language, to realize the changes in meaning caused by accenting and
intonation and to understand the message coming from the speaker clearly and fully.
When compared with other skills, listening activities should consist of activities
closer to real life and the related evaluations and measurements. Listening activities
conducted within the classroom are naturally not suitable for real life situations.
According to Downs, listening as making an effort to hear something; to pay
attention or heed. In her book, she explains that listening is different from hearing

because listening is the physiological process of the ear absorbing sound waves and
transferring them along neutral path ways to parts of the brain. She explains that hearing
is necessary for listening, but listening is much more than processing sound. From this,
it can be concluded that listening is important and it is a first skill that people have to
pass. In other words, listening is needed to continue another skill such as speaking,
reading and writing skill. Because in listening, people have to give their attention and
try to get meaning from something that they hear. If they get the meaning means that
they can give their opinion through oral or written. It can be said, listening is a first
input for communication.
Also, it can be said that listening exercises based on the Movie clips can be more
attractive and motivating than fictional ones. It can be said that listening exercises with
a closer perspective to real-life situations can be more attractive and motivating than
fictional ones. On the other hand, one of the methods to build the listening skill for B 1
level learners in foreign language is teaching with Movie clips. In video teaching,
images accompany the sound and this encourages the students to become more
motivated and interested in learning the language. That B 1 level learner’s listen to the
dialogs on the screen accompanied visually in a meaningful environment is closer to the
real life. Therefore, it could be suggested that providing the audiovisual characteristics
together is very beneficial for B1 level learners and video brings the real life into the
classroom. Thus, students will both hear and see the speaker’s thanks.
Movie clips can help the students in various ways with the audiovisual knowledge
transfer they provide. Some of these ways are having a main idea from the
communicative situations in the movie, to understand the meaning of words they do not
know and to organize the linguistic structures and to establish a scheme for each
situational context.
There many advantages of using Movie clips in developing listening skill:
The biggest benefit of developing listening skill through movies is that you can
master any language of your choice without anyone’s help. You can learn the target
language even though you don’t live in the country where people speak your target

language.
If you are a shy person who is afraid of interacting with others in your target
language because of the fear of making mistakes, then movie-based language learning
might be one of the best options for you.
You don’t have to empty your pockets to join language classes. Today,
everything is available on the internet, and that does not cost much to use. If I can watch
a Hindi or a Korean film for free by sitting in the USA, it means that you don’t have to
invest anything but time to learn a language by watching movies.
Movie-based learning makes you an incredible listener. You develop an ear for
pronunciations, dictions, dialects, etc. You also pick up cool phrases and slangs by
watching movies which would not be possible if you went to a formal tutor to learn a
language.
What I really like about developing listening through movie clips is that you can
control the pace of your learning. You can pause, rewind, fast forward or slow down
the movie at will to grasp the language at your own convenience.
To sum it up, the unconventional approach of developing listening through movie
clips makes it fairly interesting and entertaining. Just like any other language learning
technique, it requires focus, patience and lots of practice to watch movies and learn from
it.
