Writing is one of the skills that requires formal education. Acquiring this skill demands a lot of
effort, hard work, and preparation. This is because writing is not just about organizing thoughts
and putting them on paper. Sentences must be logically connected to each other in terms of
meaning. For this, it is appropriate to use linking words and phrases, as they serve as tools that
ensure the quality and effectiveness of writing. Writing is essential for professional and academic
endeavors because it facilitates intercultural communication and enables educators, students, and
researchers to share their intellectual output with global communities. Writing can encourage the
exploration and realization of complex ideas because good writers adopt a process-oriented
methodology, repeatedly brainstorming, drafting, and editing their texts. Writing can teach
students the art of having good conversations, and students can benefit from narrative and
argumentative writing (Munoz et al., 2006),[1].
Any literary piece flows logically when transitional words are used. They provide coherence and
cohesiveness to writing when used correctly. Linking words demonstrate the connections
between ideas and they assist various functions. Such as comparing ideas, adding extra
informations and giving examples. Apart from this, transition words play an important role

As mentioned above, linking words are very important because they provide connections
between words and sentences and help your writing sound professional.According to E.B.White
"Writing is an act of faith, not a trick of grammar[2]". This means that writing should not only be
seen as a text free of grammatical errors or built with complex structures, but rather as an act of
sincere expression from the heart. The writer trusts that the reader will understand their message.
That is why it is emphasized that writing is not only about grammar. However, this does not
mean that grammar is unimportant—on the contrary, grammar plays a key role in clearly
conveying what the writer wants to express to the reader.
Rules
to
Use
Linking
Words
Correctly
Linking words are an essential part of any English writing, as they can help to connect ideas
together, make relationships between points, and provide cohesion. It’s important to use linking
words correctly in order to avoid confusion and ensure that your writing is clear and easy to
understand.
Here
are
a
few
tips
for
using
linking
words
correctly.
1. Pay Attention to Grammar: Linking words should always be used in the correct form. For
example, if you are linking two sentences with a coordinating conjunction (e.g. “and”), the
conjunction should come between the two sentences.
2. Understand the Meaning of Linking Words: Linking words can have different meanings
depending
on
how
they
are
used.
Make sure you understand the meaning of each word so that you can choose the right one for the
context.
3. Use a Variety of Linking Words: Don’t just rely on one type of linking word. Mix up your
linking words by using different forms and structures (e.g. subordinating conjunctions, phrases,
and clauses).

4. Be Careful Not to Overuse Linking Words: It’s important not to overuse linking words as this
can make your writing sound repetitive and monotonous[3]. Students should use them sparingly
and only when they are necessary. Following these tips will assist them use transition words
correctly and make their writing more effective. Besides that students pay attention to grammar,
understand the meaning of connectives, use a range of linking words and be careful not to
overuse Zadie Smith said the following : "Your sentences should work together like instruments
in an orchestra, with linking words and phrases providing smooth transitions between the sounds,
ensuring coherence and rhythm in your writing[4]." This quote compares literary language to a
musical orchestra, highlighting the complexity of writing and the harmony required to create a
perfect tone. This analogy illustrates the crucial role linking words play in writing, as they ensure
the logical flow of ideas, much like how instruments in an orchestra come together to create a
cohesive piece of music. In my opinion, Smith’s comparison is highly appropriate. In writing,
linking words are not just grammatical tools; they are devices that facilitate smooth transitions
between ideas. They not only maintain the flow of information but also regulate the overall
rhythm of the text. Without these connectors, the writing becomes fragmented, making it harder
for the reader to follow. Therefore, I fully agree with Smith’s point. Linking words are vital in
maintaining the balance and logical consistency of a text, allowing the writer to communicate
clearly and smoothly with the reader.
It can be concluded that linking words play the main role and it is also important to use it
correctly in writing. The reader may perceive the concepts as fragmented and unclear if there are
no connecting words. The reader can more easily perceive the connections between the various
elements of a phrase or paragraph when linking words are used.
