Abstract

Withania somnifera L. is a shrub in the family Solanaceae, belonging to the Withania genus. The plant is native to India, and is known locally as “Ashwagandha”. It is not found in Uzbekistan in its natural state. Withania somnifera has long been used in Indian folk medicine as a natural remedy for the treatment and prevention of many diseases. The roots and leaves of the plant contain chemically active compounds, withanolides, alkaloids and flavonoids. Withania somnifera is a therapeutic and prophylactic agent for neurological diseases, diseases caused by inflammation and bacteria, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, infertility, stress and sleep disorders.
