Soviet Union Central Asia Islam atheism repressions mosques religious policy madrasas religious administrations.Abstract
This article analyzes the Soviet Union’s religious policy toward the Muslims of Central Asia based on historical sources. It examines the initial pragmatic approach after 1917, the intensive atheistic campaigns of the 1920s–1930s, the partial relaxation following World War II, and the religious revival observed in the 1980s. The study investigates the closure of mosques and madrasas, persecution of religious scholars, the dismantling of Islamic education, and the activities of Soviet religious administrations. The article evaluates the impact of these policies on the region’s cultural heritage and the spiritual life of its Muslim communities.References
