PECULIARITIES OF TRANSLATING POETIC STYLISTIC DEVICES

Abstract:

The given article is devoted to the peculiarities of translating poetic stylistic

devices. A problem that has bedeviled generations of translators is, “What is a

satisfactory translation?” There exist numerous and varied answers to this question from

different theoretical perspectives and from different translators and translation scholars.

Keywords

:

poetic stylistic devices, translation, poetry

Translation plays a huge role in the cultural development of mankind. Thanks

to translation, people learn the culture of other countries, begin intercultural

communication with each other, and find differences in a particular cultural sphere. That

is why there are a number of problems in translation. One of them is the translation of

a poetic text. First you need to define what poetry and poetic text are. In the dictionary

of Vladimir Ivanovich Dal, poetry is “elegance in writing; everything artistic, spiritually

and morally beautiful, expressed in words, and, moreover, in more measured speech.

Finally, the very compositions are called poetry, writings of this kind and the rules

invented for this: verses, poems and the science of poetry.

The definition of D. N. Ushakov is as follows: “poetry is poetry, poetic,

rhythmically organized speech, the opposite of prose. The totality of poetic works of

some social group, people, era, etc.” [Ushakov, 2005]. But we find the main feature of

this term in the dictionary of literary terms: "poetry is a lyrical form of reflection of

reality" [Belokurova, 2005]

In the definitions, one can see both similar and opposite points. Each of the

authors interpreted and expressed his thought in his own way, fully reflecting the

specifics of the concept of "poetry". The exact definition of the term "poetic text" in the

theory of translation does not yet exist. But, according to Y. Lotman, a poetic text is an

"organized language", which is composed in a "special way".

Creating an accurate connotation for this term is difficult because there are

some difficulties in poetry that are associated with internal and external factors

influencing the language. If we have decided on the definition of "poetry" and "poetic

text", then let's pay attention to one more fundamental term that is of great importance

in the analysis of poetry - this is "poetic translation".

According to L. L. Nelyubin, poetic translation is “the transfer from one language to

another language, from one culture to another of a poetic work perceived as a poetic

work”

That is, the author tells us about cultural differences and contradictions that

may arise when translating a poetic work. It should be noted that poetic translation has

been and remains one of the most difficult subspecies in literary translation.

So, what are the specifics and complexity of this type of translation? In modern

translation studies, the translation of poetry belongs to the section of special problems.

A detailed classification of the problems that arise in the translation of poetry can be

found in such researchers as V.V. Slobodnikova and O.V. Petrova.

They identify four key and fundamental questions that a translator may have in the

course of their work:

1.

Is it possible to recreate in a poetic translation the entire system of images and

associations that underlie the original poetic text, and if so, will they have the same

effect on the reader of the translation as on the reader of the original?

2.

Is it possible to translate a poetic text in the size of the original, and if not, with

what meaningful and formal losses does this entail?

3.

Is it necessary to strive to transfer the poetic text to the size of the original, and if

this is done, then with what meaningful and formal losses does this involve?

4.

To what extent is it possible and to what extent necessary to preserve the character

of the original rhyme in the translation?

It is not in vain that the authors stop their attention on these issues, as they

remain relevant and in demand at the present time. It is necessary to consider all the

features of the translation from FL to TL in order to achieve the most complete and

appropriate picture that can be reproduced with the help of images and associations that

arise in the reader.

At the moment, many poetic texts are translated using interpreters. We repeat,

in order to make an adequate translation of a poetic text as close as possible to the

original, it is necessary to study in detail all aspects of the language.

It should be noted that in the poetic text there is also a whole array of

information transmitted in addition to its own meaning. This informational non-sense

complex is called aesthetic information [Golovin, 1977]. In poetry, and especially in

lyric poetry, aesthetic information often dominates not only factual, but also conceptual

information. It is the transfer of aesthetic information that is the main task of the

translator.
