Annotation:
This article discusses the role and importance of the proverb genre in the English
and Uzbek linguistic landscape, and the fact that proverbs are a constant object of study for many
representatives of linguistics, linguists and historians, ethnographers. The proverb genre has its
own linguistic features that distinguish it from other genres, these features give proverbs melody,
beautiful content and help to focus the listener's attention on the speech.
Keywords:
proverb, linguistic, laziness, diligence, genre, fluency, work, concept, semantics.
We know that almost all scholars have been hesitant since the concept of defining a proverb was
introduced. If we look at the opinions of some famous scholars, one of them, Taylor Whiting and
Jones, argued that defining a proverb is impossible and inappropriate. If we dwell on Taylor's
opinion, it is difficult, even impossible to define a proverb, since it is said that "an
incommunicable quality which tells us that whether a sentence is a proverb and the other is not"
is said, then there is no need to define a proverb, because we all know what a proverb is. It
should also be noted that proverbs, as semantically and structurally complete texts, are an
important object of study in text linguistics.
Interest in the proverb from a literary point of view, its use to enhance the artistic quality of the
work and ensure the fluency of the artistic language have always been the focus of attention of
word artists. We can use proverbs no matter what field or topic they are about. The use of
proverbs has been thoroughly analyzed not only by contemporary but also by literary figures of
past centuries. For example: If we carefully study the works of Yusuf Khos Hajib, Ahmad
Yassavi, Rabguzi, Lutfi, Alisher Navoi, Babur, Abulgozi Bahodirkhan, Munis, Ogahiy, Muqimi,
Furqat, Avaz, Hamza, Sadriddin Ayni, Fitrat, Cholpon, Abdulla Qodiriy, Oybek, Gafur Ghulam
and dozens of other creators, we can see how many proverbs are present in their composition,
sometimes in a changed form. Proverbs that express the concept of labor have found their place
not only in today's sources, but also in the sources of that period.
In the process of analyzing the articles, we came across proverbs that encompass several
different topics. At the same time, during the analysis, we witnessed that there are quite a few
proverbs expressing the concept of “labor” in the Uzbek and Uzbek proverbs. It is known that
since ancient times, our parents have emphasized that hard work and diligence are at the heart of
any achievement. Working and meeting one’s needs has its importance not only in ancient times,
but also today. Vices such as laziness and lack of interest in work have always been condemned.
The serious approach of the English and Uzbek people to such issues is reflected in proverbs. If
we look at some of them: ‘‘All is over bar (but) the shouting‘’. The literal translation of this
proverb is as follows: Bari ortda koli, vakt shodlika yatdi. This proverb may have the following
equivalent in Uzbek: The harder the work, the sweeter Katie will be.
Despite some similarities between English and Uzbek proverbs, we can also find some
differences between English and Uzbek proverbs about work. If we look at English proverbs,

they are mainly focused on the practical and material aspects of work, such as productivity and
efficiency. For example, if we look at one of the English proverbs, the proverb “Time is money”
puts forward the idea of using time effectively and being able to distribute it correctly
in order to achieve financial success. Practical and material aspects in Uzbek proverbsalong with
honesty, endurance, more attention is paid to the spiritual and moral aspects of labor. The above
proverbs are an example of this.
In conclusion, we can say that English and Uzbek proverbs on the topic of the concept of "labor"
have some similarities in terms of their characteristics, namely the importance of hard work and
determination. By studying this process, we can understand the cultural values and beliefs
reflected in the proverbs more deeply and apply them to our lives.
