The Jadidism Movement and The Development of Primary Education
The Jadidism movement arose in the late nineteenth century among Muslim communities of the Russian Empire, advocating comprehensive reform of traditional maktab systems through the introduction of the usul-i jadid (“new method”) pedagogy. This study employs a systematic review of periodicals, pedagogical manuals, archival decrees and contemporary scholarship to trace the evolution of primary education under Jadid influence. Findings reveal that Jadid schools expanded rapidly in urban centers between 1905 and 1917, replacing rote Qur’anic memorization with phonetic reading, interactive dialogue, and a secular curriculum encompassing literacy, arithmetic, geography and hygiene. Teacher training seminars and local print culture underpinned the movement, while funding from merchant patrons facilitated institutional growth. Despite conservative ulama opposition and logistical constraints in rural areas, Jadid innovations were later assimilated into Soviet and post-Soviet educational reforms. This article illuminates how Jadid pedagogy not only enhanced literacy rates but also fostered critical engagement with modern social issues, laying foundational elements for Central Asian national consciousness.
Educational and Moral Views in Eastern Pedagogical Teachings
Classical Eastern thinkers located the purpose of education in the inseparable cultivation of knowledge and virtue. Yet the depth of their shared pedagogical vision remains underestimated in modern comparative scholarship. This article undertakes an integrative hermeneutic analysis of five representative sources—the Analects of Confucius, Zhu Xi’s exegesis on The Great Learning, Al Farabi’s Book of the Opinions of the Citizens of the Virtuous City, Ibn Sina’s Book of Salvation and Al Ghazali’s Revival of Religious Sciences—in order to reconstruct a coherent Eastern paradigm of morally grounded education. The study demonstrates that these texts, though separated by language, religion and era, converge on four principles: the ontological unity of cognitive and ethical growth; the teacher’s authority as lived example rather than mere transmitter of information; the communal nature of learning as the matrix for personal flourishing; and the ultimate civic orientation of intellectual labour. By mapping the dialogical methods, reflective routines and curricular priorities through which the authors sought to realise these principles, the article argues that Eastern pedagogical teachings offer a viable template for value oriented educational reforms that reconcile academic rigour with social responsibility. The conclusion outlines practical implications for curriculum design, teacher preparation and assessment in contemporary schools and universities.
Improving Students’ Cognitive Competence in Higher Educational Institutions (On the Example of Foreign Language Teaching)
Cognitive competence — the capacity to process, integrate and apply knowledge flexibly — is a decisive factor in the academic success of university students. In the domain of foreign‑language teaching, cognition interacts with metacognition, motivation and linguistic proficiency, forming a multilayer construct that determines how effectively learners internalise and transfer linguistic knowledge to communicative situations. The present study investigates pedagogical interventions aimed at enhancing cognitive competence among second‑year undergraduates majoring in English Philology at two Uzbek universities. A quasi‑experimental design compared a cognitively‑enriched syllabus that embedded problem‑based tasks, dialogic reflection and inductive grammar discovery with a conventional skills‑driven curriculum. Cognitive progress was measured with the Adapted Scale of Cognitive Competence (ASCC) and triangulated via think‑aloud protocols. Quantitative results demonstrate a statistically significant improvement in the experimental group (p < 0.01), while qualitative data reveal heightened strategic awareness and transfer of knowledge across disciplinary boundaries. The findings confirm that systematic cognitive scaffolding within foreign‑language instruction not only accelerates linguistic attainment but also cultivates transferable intellectual skills essential to contemporary higher education.
