The Tashkent Medical Academy, which has been existing for 100 years, is
the very first medical institute formed in the Central Asia. The Tashkent Medical
Academy was founded on the basis of the abolished First and Second Tashkent
State Medical Institutes by the Decree of the President of the Republic of
Uzbekistan I.A.
Karimov № DP –

large role has been allocated to the English language up to this day. English is one

exchange of information require knowledge of the language of international
communication and, in particular, its special features and the use of terminology
in the medical professions [2].
The only problem separating most students from learning English at the
proper level is their cognitive lack of motivation. Having chosen the profession of
doctor, the majority does not understand the significance
of ―complex sign
system‖ neither
unfamiliar nor native to home country. However, this article will
discuss two main reasons why English is of prime importance for future doctors.
We live in the 21st century and the ―Iron Curtain‖ has long passed, like
earlier, in the Soviet years, in order to become a good specialist, a doctor just had
to study well and do his job respectively on the basis of the knowledge gained, yet
current realities cannot be limited by this fact. There is hardly a single person can
deny the enormous progress in medicine over the past 20-30 years when we live
in an Independent Government. Indeed, during this time, there has been just a
huge leap, which includes the improvement of the technical equipment of medical
institutions, the ability to diagnose the vast majority of diseases at the inception
stage, the ability to accelerate recovery and restore the working capacity of the
patient. International cooperation is developing at an unprecedented speed, and
nowadays it is impossible to imagine a successful doctor who has not completed
an internship abroad. Subsequently, participation in international conferences,
seminars and trainings is a key point in the development of the health sector
throughout the country. Exchange of experience, vision of other people
’
s
achievements and possible mistakes is the engine for improving the local
healthcare system. International educators know that a well structured and
processed international internship experience presents the potential for students
to gain global competencies and skills, but further research needs to be done to
understand student motivations in choosing this type of international education
experience [3].
Modern medicine actively uses such a useful thing as the exchange of
experience. Various conferences, seminars, webinars are regularly held, where
the leading doctors in the world gather to share their rich experience. In addition,
there is a practice according to which medical students of doctors can travel for a
certain period of time to another country to exchange experience and gain new
knowledge. Thus, the English language is a lever that opens up ways and
opportunities at the global level, due to which both interns and already highly
qualified specialists can learn from foreign countries.
By demonstrating drive, passion and a willingness to step outside of
comfort zones, all qualities that will take students far in the global scientific world.
It is an opportunity that opens the way only for students with appropriate English
language proficiency to develop personal and professional skills in medical
sphere.

The second, equally important factor in motivating medical students to
study English is writing articles in international journals that are published only
in international language which is English. Unfortunately, not all young scientists,
especially students, understand the importance of publications. Namely, they are
one of the steps to a scientific career. Take as example Scopus database which is
the new platform for all recognized scientists. Scopus is the world
’
s largest
Annotation and citation database of peer-reviewed research literature. With over
22,000 titles from more than 5,000 international publishers [4].
The number of medical articles accounts for 31% of all published works in
the entire Scopus database. This is a new modern stage for self-development and
designation of the status in the scientific world of medicine. Published works are
compared with other similar ones. They can be used when drafting future
research projects or creating new concepts. It is even possible for the usual use of
elaborations in someone
’
s subsequent works on the topic with their further
development.
In order to appear and be indexed in the scopus database, a medical student
or doctor needs to write an article in English. If it passes peer review and is
accepted for publication, the author will be seen in the scopus database and his
work will be available to the whole world. With the writing of subsequent articles,
its index can grow if the work is appreciated and other authors cite it in their
publications. The type and quality of the work of a scientist is visible only from
the published scientific articles of that very scientist. People can possess different
virtues, but one
’
s medical achievements may be objectively assessed only through
the number and quality of his/her publications«[4]». Consequently, this is one of
the easiest ways for a scientist to recommend and show oneself to the scientific
community, due to which the English language served as one of the main and basic
tools.
In conclusion,
English language has become a cornerstone of worldwide
medical integration. Through pursuing the goal of overcoming the language
proficiency border, medical students can achieve their prime goal of becoming
competent and prominent doctor. Therefore, on the surface it just might seemed
to be two unrelated competences of knowledge of a foreign language and
medicine, turned out to be directly interrelated to each other. Knowledge of
English language opens up horizons to future specialists for participation in
international forums and pave the way for cooperation with foreign colleagues.
Hence, the most appropriate time to learn English language should be no later
than the period of institute study, since the university provides all the necessary
base and the opportunity to master the medical language and terms. The program
includes a huge variety of medical terms, spheres and areas necessary for the full
practice of English for specific purposes. So, when mastering English language
skills, students with a good base of specialized knowledge can count on a great
future of recognize doctors.
