This article includes English proverbs in Uzbek equivalent in terms

of meaning and content, as well as examples of the use of these proverbs in both
languages.

Key words:

semantics, proverbs, family, parents, meaning, equivalence, example,

logical meaning, concept.

Annotatsiya.

Ushbu maqolada ingliz tilidagi maqollarning o‘zbek tilidagi

ekvivalenti ma ’no va mazmun jihatidan, shuningdek, ushbu maqollarning har ikki tilda
qo ‘llanilishiga misollar keltirilgan.

Tayanch so‘zlar

: sematika, maqollar, oila ota-ona ma’no, ekvivalentlik, example,

logical meaning, tushuncha.

Semantic is the linguistic science that studies the meaning of words and phrases,

that is, what words mean when spoken or written. This concept was brought to science

by the French linguist Michel Breal in 1833. Also, the purpose of semantics is to divide

meanings into small units called semes or semantic features, to divide the meaning of

these words into segments, and to group words with similar meanings and creates

opportunities to distinguish words with opposite meanings. In the 1910s and 1920s,

interest in semantics increased among people, and many began to work in this field.

Proverb is considered a genre of folk art; a short and concise, figurative and non-

figurative, grammatically and logically complete, wise phrase with a deep meaning. It

has a specific shape. In the proverbs, the life experiences, attitude to the society, history,

mental state, ethical and aesthetic feelings, and positive qualities of the ancestors are

embodied. Proverbs have been polis There’s hed among the people for centuries and

have become a concise and simple poetic form.

There’s no place like home.

Meaning: It means that home is always the best no matter where it is. It is not

only comfortable, but also a place where love and family can be found. This proverb is

equivalent to the Uzbek proverb

“O ’z uying o ’lan to ’shaging”

and the meaning is

almost the same. This is because no other place can be like home for you.

For example: After a long time, Tom realized that there is no place like home.

Blood is thicker than water.

Meaning: this proverb means that relationships within the family are more

important and stronger than relationships outside the family. In other words, your

family will always be there for you no matter what, even if you’ve been apart or talked

down to.

But people outside of your family may abandon you in a difficult situation or leave

you if you are in a bad relationship.

The meaning of this Uzbek proverb

“Hamjihatlik doim oilani mustahkamlaydi ”

and

“Birgalikda doim ovqat shirin ”

is equivalent to the English proverb.

Example of:

dont be surprised if your friends leave you, you know you can always rely on your

family. Blood is thicker than water.

Children are a poor man’s wealth.

Meaning: It means that a poor man finds wealth through his children, partly

because they bring him joy and also because they are his inheritance.

Through them his name and hopes will live on. A poor man has no choice but to

put everything he has (all his hopes and dreams) into his children. On the other hand, a

wealthy person can rely on their wealth for their inheritance.

This proverb is in Uzbek language

“Farzanding — davlating, Fazilating —

ziynating.”

It is the same in meaning as the proverb, i.e. in the English proverb where

the child is described as the state and wealth, the child’s wealth is also compared to the

inheritance.

Example of: James may have barely made it, but he would make any sacrifice to

see his children succeed. Children are a poor man’s wealth.

Like father, like son.

Meaning: It means that the character of the son is very similar to that of the father.

This is something that can be seen from a young age. Little boys imitate their dads, and

by the time they reach adulthood, their behavior is very similar. There is a very similar

saying,

“Mother like daughter”

and it means the same thing. In Uzbek, which

corresponds to this proverb,

“Ota qarab o‘g‘il o‘sadi, Onaga qarab qiz o‘sadi”.

There

is also another saying

“Qush inida ko‘rganini qiladi ”

which can have the same

meaning as the English proverb.

For example : Billy faces the same problems his father did at his age. Like father

and son. My mom and I both love to eat apple pie, and when my dad sees me eating it,

my mom says it’s like my daughter.

The apple does not fall far from the tree.

Meaning: Children behave like their parents. Children usually talk like their

parents, eat what their parents eat, and like what their parents like.

This can also apply to children who look like their parents. This proverb can be

used to describe the similarities between a parent and a child.

In Uzbeks, a similar version of this proverb is used, that is,

“Olma tagiga olma

tushadi”.

And good and bad qualities may also be similar.

For example: Mary is just like her father, up to her nose, the apple does not fall far

from the tree.

In conclusion, it can be seen that the proverb makes our speech meaningful in the

process of conversation, and it is used in almost the same situations in both languages.

Besides, we consider them equivalent not because of the literal translation of the English

proverb, but because the meanings express the same idea. The following proverbs are

analyzed in this direction.
