This article talks about the importance of foreign languages in
the work of a journalist and the importance of a journalist
’
s knowledge of foreign
languages.
Key words:
Journalism, foreign languages, Business journalists
In today
’
s digitalized and globalized age, each future journalist must be able
to share his/her information directly with foreign audiences. In this way, besides
modern IT tools, the foreign languages play very active and important role in
spreading his/her journalistic stories among people from entire World.[1] As a
journalist, knowing a second language can help with more than creating content
in that language. It can help you with jobs related to functioning in that language.
Jobs that would require you to function in another language might include
conducting interviews (in both foreign countries and with minorities in your own
city) and investigations.[2]
If you choose to study an uncommon foreign language, such as arabic or
swahili or whatever, that could lead to you becoming a specialist in that area,
which would be a major hook in finding journalism jobs as a correspondent in that
area. Do you want to be a middle-eastern correspondent? Study arabic. East Africa
specialist. Study swahili. Etc. [3]
Advice to students and journalists: Fluency in a second language is a
tremendous career boost and being able to handle three languages even better.
Writing and speaking another language at a journalistic level is not easy, but that
coupled with business knowledge assures that you will be an impressive job
candidate throughout your career.[4]
The above opinions were expressed by scientists, statesmen and ordinary
people. I also want to share my thoughts.
Foreign languages are incredibly important for journalists for several
reasons:

1. Access to diverse sources: Knowing a foreign language allows journalists
to access sources, information, and stories that may not be available in their own
language. This can greatly expand the scope and depth of their reporting.
2. International coverage: In today
’
s globalized world, journalists are often
required to cover international events and stories. Knowing a foreign language
enables them to communicate with local people, understand local perspectives,
and accurately report on events in different countries.
3. Breaking language barriers: Journalists who are fluent in a foreign
language can break down language barriers and communicate directly with
individuals whose stories may otherwise go untold. This can lead to a more
balanced and comprehensive coverage of important issues.
I would like to give an example based on my work. In October and
November of this year, important international events UNWTO and CRIC21 were
held in Samarkand, which brought together the ministers of tourism and ecology
of many countries of the world, as well as leaders of prestigious organizations.
The host of these events in Uzbekistan was our ministry, the Ministry of Ecology.
I also participated as a journalist of the ministry and gained a lot of experience for
myself.
At the event, my main task was to work with representatives of local and
foreign mass media and to interview guests about the issues under consideration.
Since the main language of the conference is English, I didn
’
t have much difficulty.
But communicating with the ministers of some countries, such as Turkey and
Saudi Arabia, or rather persuading them to have an interview, has become a little
more difficult.
Nevertheless, I managed to persuade them to an interview. Because Arabic
was my second language and I said to the minister of Saudi Arabi

"Assalamu alaykum,
welcome! How are you?" Can I interview you in English?" I said in Arabic. Through
this, I won his love and managed to get an exclusive interview. As for the Turkish
minister, I watched a lot of Turkish movies, and I used the words I learned to
please him.
4. Cultural understanding: Language is often closely tied to culture, and
journalists who speak a foreign language can better understand the nuances of
different cultures and societies. This understanding is crucial for providing
accurate and respectful coverage of international events and stories.
5. Professional development: In an increasingly competitive industry,
journalists with foreign language skills have a distinct advantage. Being able to
work in multiple languages opens up more opportunities for international
assignments, career advancement, and collaborations with media outlets around
the world.
Overall
, foreign language skills are essential for journalists who want to
provide comprehensive, accurate, and culturally sensitive coverage of global
events and issues.
