EDWARD ALLWORTH AND THE STUDY OF MODERN UZBEKS

Edward Allworth (1920-2016) was a prominent scholar and historian who specialized in
the study of Central Asia, particularly Uzbekistan and its people. He made significant contributions
to our understanding of modern Uzbek history, culture, and identity.
Here are some key points about Allworth's work on modern Uzbeks:
Focus on Identity Formation: Allworth was particularly interested in how the Uzbek people
developed their distinct national identity in the modern era. He explored the complex interplay of
historical, cultural, linguistic, and political factors that contributed to this process.
Emphasis on Jadidism: Allworth saw the Jadid movement, a reformist movement that
emerged in Central Asia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as a crucial factor in shaping
modern Uzbek identity. He argued that the Jadids, who advocated for educational and social
reforms, helped lay the groundwork for a national awakening among Uzbeks.
National Identity under Soviet Rule: Allworth also examined how Uzbek national identity
evolved under Soviet rule. He analyzed the Soviet policies of "nativization" and "delimitation" and
their impact on Uzbek culture, language, and political representation.
